Sex jokes at work

My manager made a joke about vaginas in front of a room of men, me being the only woman. It made me feel uncomfortable even though I know he didn't mean to upset me.

It was a vulgar joke too and just wasn't funny. I wasn't offended more I felt like crying.

I told my husband about it and burst out crying. I felt degraded and vulnerable.

Don't talk to him about it personally. Complain to HR.

Fucking hell what is the world coming to.

Sad that women don’t always support other women when this is clearly hugely inappropriate behaviour and from a manager too.
Perhaps those who minimise this haven’t had the misfortune to be targeted by a man/ men at work so don’t appreciate how this can make someone feel and how this sort of management behaviour influences all the other potential sexist twats in the team.
Don’t approach him directly. Go to HR and have it dealt with properly. You owe him nothing after behaving like this. “Jokes” are frequently used to express true prejudice with the added bonus that the butt of the so called humour can be further mocked for taking things to seriously etc.

Straight to HR.

The rest of the team were cringing.
Really inappropriate. Think he thought he was down the pub.

I think as you were the only woman it takes on a different level. I'd try having a word with him about how it made you feel as the sole woman in a group of men.
I'd be uncomfortable with it too... he should have thought before he spoke. Hopefully he's a decent person and will just apologise and take more care in the future.
If he's not a decent person then take it further.

Sometimes men will tell these "jokes " to test the waters and then start pushing other boundaries. Many years ago when I was sexually harassed this is how it started . If this starts to become a pattern then nip it in the bud .

Then HR, if it made you cry and the rest of the team were cringing he's clearly way over the line.

TBH what should have happened is that one of the other men in the room should have pointed out it was offensive. One of DH's work colleagues sent out a sexist meme on the group chat and when DH pointed out it was offensive several of the women in the group then said they found it offensive as well. The person couldn't really say anything but sorry, won't happen again after that. It shouldn't matter but sadly it does, men respond better to men saying something is sexist that to women saying something is sexist.

I would also go straight to HR rather than speak to him directly. If you were uncomfortable and everyone else in the room was cringing, he should have some awareness of that.

Like @DitzyDoughnutt the one time I heard vaginas mentioned at work was by a manager who later bullied me.

As a man I never liked masturbating or penis jokes or overly sexual apart from mentioning a crush

bctf123 · 26/04/2024 20:26

Depending on the relationship you could just bluntly call out here we'll have less of that. Lady in the room!
And or include do you talk in front of your mum like that

Because it would be ok if there wasn’t a woman in the room? 🙄
