How to handle this situation - internal job application

I have seen a role advertised for a different team in my organisation. Lots of transferable skills and I’m genuinely excited about it. It would be a promotion in seniority and there’s no opportunity in my current team so all seems like I should go for it.

However, while most managers would say “it’s a great opportunity I’m so happy for you” mine won’t. Another colleague left and when they handed in their notice he said “I’m so pissed off and disappointed” even though it was a great promotion in a sister organisation. Now that’s fine if you’re leaving, but if I don’t get it, because it’s internal he’ll almost certainly find out about it, which will be embarrassing (if I don’t get it) and damage the trust. Urgh, it’s almost deterring me but I really do want the job. I wasn’t looking and it’s surprising me how excited I am. I just have to do it and suck up the consequences don’t I?

Don't hold yourself back! Just do it. You'll only regret it if you don't.

Apply for the job!

Yes. But we're behind you!

Yes go for it. I’m in similar position but I think, to my face my manager will be ok ish but behind my back I, sure she won’t be! Your career is up to you so don’t let it hold you back.

Well, your choices are:

Stay where you are forever because your boss acts like a bit of a nob when people leave.

Or, face up to a bit of a frosty handover period and move to a shiny new exciting job!

Don't let them hold.you back with a mardy!

If I get the job it’s less of an issue. If I don’t get it but he learns I went for it he’ll be pissed off and he’s not discreet and takes things really personally.

It's usual to tell your manager if you're applying for an internal vacancy. Is that not the case where you work? But as a pp has stated, don't let his poor behaviour put you off going for this.
