Does a big salary put you off?

Stupid sounding question, but if you see a really high salary do you assume you couldn't do that job? I am a civil servant earning £70k, I've seen a job in the private sector with a salary of £120,000 that I fit the job spec for and want to apply for, but really struggling to get past the feeling that it is out of my league, talking myself down, and worry how stressful it must be to garner that salary and would I even be capable etc etc.

Anyone made this jump successfully and it has been within their ability?!

Over 25 years FS experience…defo just go for it !!! Post-covid Standard arrangement was 3 days WFH 2 in office. I was always supported with flex working.

Keep us posted !

This place advertises 2 days a week only in office, if it wasn't for that I wouldn't be able to go for it as it's a long commute and I love WFH, but I'm pretty sure I could manage 2 days on that salary (does take a big dent out of the uplift though!) civil service is mandating 3 days now (though I have a flexible working adjustment in place).

Look up imposter syndrome op. It’s very common in women (less so in men) and it’s what holds women back from furthering their careers or feeling confident in new roles. You can absolutely do this, just go for it!

It's actually quite common in men too, they are just better at blagging it out.

I’m far more junior than you, but my recent experience might be relevant.
I got an interview for a financial services company,(career changing) and came on this board to question whether to attend or not as I found out a numeracy test was required.
I was convinced I would fail this so felt I best pull out.

People on this board urged me to go. I’m so glad I did. I didn’t get that job but learnt A LOT from the process and actually gained some confidence.
6 months later I’ve been offered a job with another big financial services company and I doubt I’d have got it without the previous interview experience.

So I’d say don’t overthink all the implications/question your ability - in and of itself, the process of applying is worthwhile. You’ll find out more about the sector and company, and if this job is too much of a leap it may prepare you well for something in between that comes up later. Good luck !

@sweetpeaorchestra thank you, I am so thrilled you got a job offer! Yes I think I'm going to stop overthinking it and see it as an opportunity to get some experience in private sector recruitment, it would be great to get to interview stage in order to get some proper feedback. Next year is when I will really want a job move so no harm getting some practice in now! If nothing else it's got me to do a properly updated CV, I've been using the awful template I set up in uni a very long time ago ha.

Good luck in your role!

@kloresg

How's it going?

Did you apply?

kloresg · 06/05/2024 09:14

Hi there, yes I did! It closed last Monday but haven't heard anything yet. They said they respond to every application so hopeful I will hear something either way. The job hasn't been re advertised thus far (it was extended, I applied in the extension period so will take another extension as a rejection ha!)

I went from 52k to 97k recently and I'm so glad I just went for it. Of course I was a bit nervous about not being good enough for the role but it turns out I was!
