Dilemma about pt or ft employment - help me think it through!

OK - I'm currently working 1 day a week for a small charity and not 100% happy there and have just seen my dream job BUT it is fulltime (and working from home).

DD is 3 so will be off to nursery soon and school is not far off so should I be planning ahead and thinking about full time work or am I going to be making life too difficult for myself. DH works shifts and wouldn't be able to commit to helping with childcare. But the money in the ft job is brilliant so childcare costs wouldn't be a problem.

However, I've just had a successful fundraising bid come through which would mean that I wouldn't have to chase funding which would make my current job much easier. Basically it would mean my current job would be a lot less stressful (and maybe more enjoyable?)

What would you do? I've started on the application form and am fairly sure I'll get to interview stage as I meet all of the criteria on the person spec.

Go for it, see if you can get your dream job. If it turns out to put too much pressure on you then you don't have to do it forever and can go back to part time work.

sophierosie,
this is so difficult isn't it? i am really struggling to find any part time work that will pay enough to make it worthwhile going back to work so I totally sympathise.
anyway, i don't know what i would do but definitely apply and go to interview, you don't have to take the job if you decide its not for you but you will kick yourself if you don't give it a go.
good luck whatever you decide to do.

No harm in applying. Once you've had the interview and found out more then you can make up your mind.

i am a fulltime fundraiser and i LOVE my job!

i work 3 days per week from an office and 2 days from home

Congrats on your funding coming through - you must be really pleased

anyway, i say go for your dream job

I'd go for it. If you get through the first interview and still feel it's your ideal job, then talk to your prospective employers about perhaps reduced hours until your DD goes to nursery / school......

usually dream jobs and dream candidates go hand in hand and they may well be more than happy to consider a little flexibility?

Good luck!

I think I'm definitely going to apply - its a different field to what I have been working in and is an advisory role rather than management which would be great!

Its so hard isn't it trying to juggle everything. I worked ft for 6 months after dd was born and then was lucky enough to be made redundant so have been living off that and have been enjoying spending time with her!

If you applied and were offered it do you think its the kind of job where you could put in a flexible working request?

Even 4 days a week or finishing early might make a big difference to you but not a huge one to your future employers and bridge that gap between one day a week and f/t.
