URGENT - What do you think to this job offer? Thoughts good and bad

Need advice on this - good points and bad as need to go back to Boss tom morning.

To cut a long story short my colleugue has resigned and Ive been offered her job. Said no to begin with as I cant possibly do 5 days a week (I currently do 1 day every Friday). They then said can I do 3? Again dont think I can manage 3 due to no childcare. So this is whats on the table now:

  1. Commit to 2 x days a week (Friday and one other day they dont mind which)
  2. Do 3 days when I can(which I would be able to do every couple of weeks due to Hubby's shift pattern)
  3. In school holidays just do one day
  4. Dont have to stay away at conferences etc...

Sounds ok so far and it could work. Just wondering how holidays would work etc... any comments, advice would be very welcome

By the way Little One is in pre-school twice a week so my Hubby wouldnt get too stressed about having him all the time!!

  1. They understand if LO is ill and I cant get childcare I dont come in.

Sounds to me like they really value you if they are prepared to be so incredibly flexible to get you to do this new job.

I can't think of any bad thoughts! Why are you hesitating?

mumma2cjh · 01/04/2008 14:45

just sounds too good to be true and us worried not enough hours to do job, and I would just hate to let anyone down!

Sounds great - is there anything in particular you are worried about?

It sounds as if they really want you to do it and as if there are being really flexible around childcare etc.

Your holiday would be pro rata.

NatalieJane · 01/04/2008 14:45

Agree with Shhh, just watch they don't expect you do the same work load as your ex-colleague.

I'd make it clear you wouldn't take on her whole responsability, but you'll give it a go.

sophierosie · 01/04/2008 14:46

Surely they would have to scale down the scope of the job as you wouldn't be expected to work a ft job on pt hours.

NorthernLurker · 01/04/2008 14:47

that sounds fantastic! I want to work for your company. I don't think they would make you this offer if they couldn't see it working - go for it! How mnay days will they pay you for as basic then? Two? I would find out what the arrangement would be for paying your extra days.

clumsymum · 01/04/2008 14:48

Either they really value you, or this is an awful job and they can't see a hope in hell of filling it.

They originally wanted 5 days per week, but they'll settle for 5 days per fortnight, just 1 day in school hols? ut does that mean they'll employ someone else to do the other hours, or are you just going to be always drowned in work, never having the chance to catch up, clear a backlog.

The hours sound great (just what we all want), but it depends what the job entails.

NatalieJane · 01/04/2008 14:48

Sophie I was thinking of the many tales on here of people returning P/T after maternity leave, but still expected to do the same job they did F/T before.

stealthsquiggle · 01/04/2008 14:48

They are bending over backwards - they must really love you, or really have issues finding anyone else!

As long as they understand that 2/5 of a full time person = 2/5 of the workload, and you have agreed checkpoints with immediate manager to make sure it stays that way, I would go for it.

Odd days in holidays can be managed - take a friend's DC on one of your non-working days and get them to take yours when you are working.

It can be done (she says, trying to convince herself )

pedilia · 01/04/2008 14:49

Just be careful about the amount you will be required to do, ask them who is responsible for the workload you will not be doing i.e what you cannot fit into 2/3 days.

I went back PT after mat leave but I still have my full weeks workload to do and I was still on-call all week

mumma2cjh · 01/04/2008 14:57

yes job is being totally scaled down - have already addressed that!!! There will also be soem admin support available.

Pay is the next question. I Assumed I will get paid for 2 days per week (pro-rata) and get paid monthly for any additional days/hours I do - which is sort of what I do now.

We sort of agreed that we would review on a regular basis to see how it was going - so I do feel there is the support, but I suppose its the same with everything you have to "suck it and see". I have made it plain from the beginning that I would not be able to comit to certain things like staying away etc... and they seem ok about it. Ive been doing the job for 18months and feel fairly knowledgable

In which case what are you waiting for?!!!

mumma2cjh · 01/04/2008 22:11

yes I know - it just seems all too good to be true. Have another meeting tom so will iron out a few things etc....

I really do not know what I would do without MUMNET - thank you for your support and advice
