Would you take this job?

I'm on maternity leave with 7 month old twins. I wasn't originally planning on going back to work until they are 3 (as I did with my firstborn). An email popped up that I had been invited to apply for the job of a nursery manager. I asked if I could bring my twins and 3 year old if appointed, and they've said yes. Only issue is that the pay is £28k for 45 hours of work. Seems like loads of work for that salary. Pre maternity, I was a secondary school teacher on a higher salary than this. They've already invited me to interview this Wednesday and seem really keen. Part of me thinks it would be great as I would earn money to look after my own kids but the other part of me knows I probably won't even be able to look after my own kids and will be working super long days. What would you do?

It'd entirely depend on how much I needed the money. I wouldn't work 45 hours a week (for any money with young kids) unless I absolutely had to.

If I needed to work then I would potentially go for it, given that you'd be able to see first hand how your kids are treated and able to make changes (hopefully!) if you're not happy.

It's hard without all your financial and emotional context but no, I don't think I would do it

loropianalover · 22/04/2024 23:36

It’s impossible to really say without knowing your general financial situ but 28k for 45hrs absolutely not!

determinedtomakethiswork · 23/04/2024 00:23

I wouldn't work with my own children now because there will be times when you won't be able to deal with them and they will be unhappy about that.

BlastedPimples · 23/04/2024 04:15

Crap pay. Long week. Instant no.

Olika · 23/04/2024 04:29

28k for 45h is too low. And surely as a nursery manager you would be doing other things than looking after any kids.

Elephantswillnever · 23/04/2024 04:43

Its just under £12 ph. Honestly even with a staff discount I’d assume nursery fees would cost more.

VenetiaHallisWellPosh · 23/04/2024 04:50

No. It's peanuts. I wouldn't bother.

tastydiner · 23/04/2024 06:52

No, I don’t think I would. Even if your kids could go free of charge, it’s a huge amount of hours to work and for them to be in the nursery environment. Would you have a long commute too?

JoyousPinkPeer · 23/04/2024 23:26

Go for the interview. If you fancy the job after interview ... negotiate on both hours and pay.

boombang · 23/04/2024 23:30

does it come with free childcare?

Yeah it's a long time for my twins. 3 year does pre- school twice a week so I think she would cope. It's a 30 minute drive so not too bad

Thanks everyone. Wednesday (today) seemed too short notice for me so I postponed to this Friday. I've actually collaborated with a friend on a business idea so I might just cancel the interview now
