New job after maternity leave

So I have a history of working in nurseries but am now working in the role as a support worker (currently on maternity leave) I am 100% sure I don’t want to return a due to the challenges the job holds and the shifts are a long 24.5 hours. I planned taking the whole year off, so will be returning in November. But I have decided that I would like to get back into working in a nursery. I’m really not sure about how to go around it. Do I apply for some jobs nearer the time and hope they have a space for my little girl or plan to look around nurseries pretty soon and ask if they would have any vacancies going for when my maternity leave finished? I’m also aware some places are going to be full due to the childcare funding! Just stuck on what to do as I don’t want to be jobless nor have any childcare for my daughter!

First things first, if you are returning to work you need childcare in place. If they then have a vacancy and you are successful at interview, great. If not, you can find work at another nursery but I would not wait to secure a place for her and have time to settle her etc.

With Employment rights being eroded on every level I dont see why you couldn't go freelance to start with, then put out applications for the place that suits you.

Hi, I'm in the same position as you. My maternity leave finishes in June and I started applying in January. I just got offered a new position today.

I hated my last job. I used to dread going in everyday. So I'm chuffed to bits. I start as soon as mat leave is over.

Good luck 👍

As someone who works in a nursery currently, if you called around asking about viewings and waiting lists it’s likely a lot will be full. But if you mention you are level 3 qualified or above they will be extremely likely to want to take you and will work out what can be done to accommodate your child😂 everyone’s desperate for practitioners

If you have plenty of nursery experience and I presume a childcare qualification I would look into nannying. Lots of nanny jobs will allow nanny to bring their own child, especially if the family have a child similar in age. The pay is better too so you may be able to work less days without taking a pay cut.

I would avoid nurseries if you can.
Nannying would be more suitable and as others have said, better pay and hours
