Tupe experiences

Hi all,

I work for an IT company and my client isn't renewing part of the their contract, this comes to an end in August 2025. It's still unclear if my area will be moving, although I'm pretty sure it will too.

My manager gave me a heads up today that I would more than likely be tuped as this is my sole client. I can look around internally in the meantime as well. I know in an ideal world they would like me to stay in my role as it's hard to train up into. But word is going around already and she wanted to let me know so I wouldn't be the last the find out.

I really don't know what to do, so far so l've only read negative things about it. I have almost 18 months to find something else, but I'm paid well and work from home full time which works really well for me as I'm a solo parent. I do worry about trying to find something which matches it.

I shouldn't be worried as I have time to find something else, but I don't let the unknown.

I have anyone got any positive stories about it? I personally feel the new company will just make me redundant as soon as I join!

I was tuped 4 years ago in an IT role, not sure how common this is but aside from an extra layer of admin in a new company, my job hasn't much otherwise changed.
It was a shock to begin with and very uncertain, I didn't know the company and how it would work but it had turned out ok so far and my team are still there.
Things to think about are if your tuped position is likely to continue long term, or a short term transfer and then you'd be made redundant after minimum limits? Do you know the client well, get a lot of work and does it seem likely to continue, or you are limited to shorter term projects that could tail off or stop at any point?
Is it less effort and stress to be tuped and employed for however long and then possibly have to look for a new position if you do get made redundant, or would you rather draw a line under the role and move somewhere else with more certainty?
Best of luck with whatever you decide.

I do know the client pretty well. They are very old school. But in terms of the work I do, there will always be a need for it.

I've read that a lot of the time people get Tuped and as soon as they start the new company they are made redundant, this is what is worrying me!

Thinking about it, I'm going to start looking for something else and just see what is out there. If something great comes up then it'll be a no brainer to leave.

I'm not keen on IT and would rather work in a more creative environment, so maybe this is the push I need.

It really depends on the specific circumstances. Plenty of people are TUPE'd and continue in the new place long term.

Other people are made redundant either before or after the TUPE.

If you're one person being TUPE'd to a client that doesn't actually need you then I'd expect to be jobless one way or another at the end of it. (That was my personal experience, but I've also been TUPE'd in circumstances where it was just a formality and I kept my job.)

The unknown is always scary and uncomfortable, plus there's the horrible shocked feeling of getting news like this - even if perhaps the writing had been on the wall.

18 months should give you time to plan a strategy and find another role that's a good fit for you and your life. Give yourself some time to process your feelings and then make a game plan.

Thanks 🙏 I had a really bad nights sleep!

But I think I'm going to look for a new job. I don't want 18 months of uncertainty because I'm really not that sure what will happen with my job. I'm 48, I'm conscious it can be harder for find jobs the older I get so I'd rather get a head start now.

I was Tuped, and it’s been fine. I’ve now been at the new company for nearly ten years. We had to do some toing and froing when they wanted to make some changes, but we came to a workable compromise
