Teacher mat leave - inset days

Hello,

Would anyone know if teachers would be required to attend inset days if this is just before mat leave starts?

I'm considering going off a bit early, and not returning for the start of September term, but wondering if I'd then need to attend inset days at the end of august. Which I can't really be bothered with if I'm not going to be there for the rest of the year!

You’re contracted to attend them.

Well if they are normal working days and your mat leave hasn’t started yet then, yes, you would need to go to them. Or you could start your mat leave before them. Or try to book medical / midwife appointments on the inset days so you’ve got an actual reason not to attend.

If youre taking a full year off start it before the inset days so you do them the following year

I'll go back to work just before the summer to make sure I get full pay for the summer holidays.

Thanks, I thought I'd need to attend. Shame!

You dont need to physically go back to get paid for summer. You can put your official return to work day as the first day of the holidays.

lookingatlife · 14/04/2024 23:38

Yes, will do that.

Looks like I'll probably go on Mat leave a week earlier than planned just to avoid those inset days. Annoying, but only a week.

Way to fleece the system.

Do all teachers on mat leave do this? Just so they can be paid for doing nothing??

Squarecircletriangle · 15/04/2024 00:07

@ticktickticktickBOOM ok I'll bite... yes every teacher I know does this. It's not fleecing the system, it makes financial sense for a woman who has been on mat leave with the last few months unpaid and who is trying to support her family. Plus, she will have planning to do during the holidays before returning so why shouldn't she get paid in full?

Oh give it a rest. If you want some of the shitty benefits then go into teaching or retrain to be a teacher.

What like most women who extend their leave by tagging paid holiday onto the beginning or end of their mat leave? Are they fleecing the system too or just making use of something they are entitled to?

They can only do this if the maternity leave end in august. At any other point in the year they probably wont be getting a full year to do this. My nurse friend, pregnant at the same time as me both times, took 13 months for both pregnancies as it didn't matter when her births fell, she could still tag accrued holiday onto the end.

seems what you actually have an issue with is women accruing holiday during maternity leave in any paid employment. You might want to look inwards as that would be sex discrimination.
