Accepted a new job but have a question for them

I’ve accepted a new job where nights and weekends are expected, generally you’d be paid unsociable hours payment for this (in the NHS) however this new job is in independent company.
They’ve sent me a contract but said further written terms and conditions will be sent on or before my first day of work.

I really want to know if enhanced rates are offered, but I don’t know if I should ask at all, ask for the terms and conditions to be sent or just ask them outright (this is HR I’m dealing with, who have said if I have any questions to ask)

Reading this back I feel silly but also don’t want to look greedy just asking about enhanced rates!

Ask for the t’s and c’s now. How can you agree a contract without?

The contract outlines the basics - salary, hours, pension etc but nothing mentioned of unsocial hours payments. I don’t really know how to say to them politely that I’d rather the t’s and c’s now??

Just say that prior to signing you’d like a copy of them?

Yes it's fine to just ask outright. They offered you the job and you accepted, you already have a legally binding contract. You are not being greedy, you are asking for clarification about your rate of pay. It is entirely normal and HR should not make any judgement about you.

What is it you are worried about? Would you reconsider the job if there were no unsocial hours payments?

Jellycatspyjamas · 08/04/2024 09:01

There’s no reason to be coy about what you’ll be paid in a job, it’s the reason you go to work and an unsociable hours payment can be the difference in a job being worth your while or not.

This is your one chance to do this OP, many places would respect you more for it tbh.

Ask now. You might regret not.

Don't sign a contract unless you understand exactly what you're being paid. It's not rude or pushy.

I used to be someone who would not have asked these questions for fear of seeming anything other than sweet. Sweetness does not come into business. You will be providing their company with your skills and time; you should damn well be appropriately reimbursed.

If they don’t pay enhanced rates but the NHS do then maybe you’ll be better off there. So you really need to know before committing!
