urgent advice with job/health situation

very stressed. life has suddenly got too complicated. i have a job offer with a new employer. there is a promotion and large salary increase from present job.

(just for background, my present job involves a secondment which gives me a better salary, but the secondment is easily terminated, meaning I can easily lose the higher salary - but I would still have a decent job if the secondment ends).

I would really like to take the new job with the new employer, but I have a health issue I've been putting off going to the doctor about. It could be lots of things, including cancer and prolapse. I strongly believe, for good reasons, that whatever it is will require surgery.

My current job, which I've been in for many years, has good periods for sick pay.

I have recently (within the past few months, prior to the health issue developing) taken out private health insurance and income protection insurance, but who knows if either of these will kick in.

I don't want to be in a position where I have no income/lose my job due to a health condition. I have a high mortgage with 15 years left on it and no income other than my salary and no family support/savings.

What should I do? I have very little time to decide on the job offer. Would appreciate advice from any wise person - but someone in HR would be especially helpful. TIA.

Many hugs x the new employer got a good or any reputation do you know?

I’m worried silly about my new job and ongoing issues which remain in the background which I’d so hoped to be rid of but life won’t quite have it yet, as much as even my freshly ex employer keep telling me ‘I’ve got the right employer’ if for worst case.

Sorry I don’t come from a place of longevity so hope someone else can chip in.

I would stay with the current employer, you have built up more good will and assuming you have worked with them for more than 2 years you will be much harder to make redundant.

In the new job you will be on probation and very easy to let go.

I don’t think the promotion comes into it much, if you want it accept it. I don’t think it makes much difference to the legalities of it all.

My other considerations at a time like this would be how stressful each position would be. Now sounds like a time where low stress is what you need.

thanks Guttedme. conditions with new employer would be similar to existing employer, i.e. decent sick pay, but then I would be new, and so always more exposed, potentially.

And I hope all your background issues go away soon. It is tough especially if you don't feel you can discuss them at work.

Thanks PinkPlantCase. You make good points. Both jobs are equally stressful. It's a stressy sort of job. But starting somewhere new is always extra stressful.

stay where you have the protection of being employed for more than two years, until you have your health issues resolved.

My advice is to see a doctor and prioritise your health. I knew someone who put off going to the GP, then had problems getting an appointment. He is now dead.
