Do I really need an electric desk or am I getting carried away? WFH office

I'm starting my first WFH job and I do have a tendency to get a bit carried away with my purchases and I've convinced myself I need an electric height adjustable smart desk with a walking pad to go underneath.

I mean obviously I know I don't actually need this, but in a sense of money/use/worth has anyone done this and regretted it? Loved it?

I've found much prettier desks without the electric function so if it isn't really worth it I will go with a more aesthetic option 😂

DH loves his. I'm envious of it. It's made a massive difference to him, previously he'd spend 12-14 hrs a day sitting. Now he stands for some of the day.

TallulahBetty · 02/04/2024 13:37

You don't need it. I'd love one tho.

coxesorangepippin · 02/04/2024 13:38

I'd buy a regular desk and see how you go

Are you sure you're work don't reimburse a desk? Maybe check

tribpot · 02/04/2024 13:38

I love mine. I must admit I use the standing feature more for when I'm using the desk to cut out fabric at the weekend, than for standing during work time, but if you can afford it I would definitely go for it.

Absolutely get an adjustable desk if you can afford it. I have a flexispot and it is fabulous, very easy and smooth to adjust and it's got a wee USB port for charging a phone / iPad which is quite handy. I have never fancied the idea of the walking pad so can't comment on that bit.

RedRosie · 04/04/2024 13:03

For me it's all about the chair, and the desk matters so much less.

But if you want it!

EpicPineapple · 04/04/2024 13:07

I have one at work and it is AMAZING. I don’t work standing up but I’m short and this is the first time I’ve ever had a comfy desk.

MrsJamin · 04/04/2024 13:13

I've just got a flexispot, there's no point buying a desk that doesn't adjust to height if you think you'll want that in the future. I like mine so far, I just stand up for meetings, it helps to keep me focused I think.

TheSpottedZebra · 04/04/2024 17:29

There's a middle ground, isn't there, a non-electric height-adjustable desk where you turn a handle. They're fine, and so much cheaper.

So it just depends how the £££ is for you and can you manage the handle, ie do you have any wrist or shoulder issues.

HagBitch · 04/04/2024 22:32

I bought an adjustable desk and mostly sit on my arse all the time 😄.

SnaccidentsHappen · 04/04/2024 22:35

A sit stand desk is a must for me. I just bought a sit stand converter as I already had a desk. Around £70 on Amazon.

Sitting all day is so bad for your health.

I've got an electric desk at home and use it a lot when I am working here. I have had a hand crank one, but it was a real pain to use, it takes so long to move it up and down. At work we have counterbalanced/floating desks that you just release and then pull up and down, they are the easiest to work with, I think, very quick to adjust, but I suspect they are expensive!

I would never go back to a fixed desk, I had months of back pain a few years ago and I really don't want to go back there again, I can feel when I need to stand up and turn my glutes back on!

FrangipaniBlue · 04/04/2024 22:54

I've wfh for the best part of 12/13 years.

I bought an electric desk in December and cannot hence I didn't buy one sooner!

I stand at mine for than sit.

OP we kitted out our home office/workstations with secondhand refurbished kit (I'm pretty certain that some co's had electric rise/fall desks).

I'm interested in a walking pad; before I google myself, are there any good sites/brands?
