Having a wobble about handing in notice

My current job is fairly rigid and inflexible, they do let me attend appointments and switch days sometimes but I have to be on-site everyday. I also really don't enjoy the role and find it quite anxiety inducing. I only work 3 days a week, so I've just got on with it really. It means long days for the kids, they are in nursery/school and wrap around from 8am-5:45pm as I work 45 minutes away.

I've accepted a new job, hybrid but based at home with the option to book a desk in the local office if I want to which is a couple of minutes away. It's flexi hours so as long as I work my hours I can do so any time between 7am-7pm. I can do school runs and I won't need wrap around etc.

I'm having a wobble now it's come to handing notice in, everything about the new role is preferable to my current role except it's 4 days per week. I currently work 3 and enjoy that I'm not working more than I am, whereas this is switching the other way where I'm then working more days than I'm not. I feel like I get a lot more time with the kids especially my youngest who doesn't start school for a few years.

Does the flexibility and the kids being able to come home at 3pm everyday rather than 5:45pm make up for me working an extra day? If in the school holidays I'll be around more in person, but available less because I'll have work to do, is that better?

Your children will be ‘losing’ the same number of hours a week with you. Just condensed into one day instead of spread across three days.

Everything about the new job looks like it's more fitted to you being more content and the other job stressed you out and you 'got on' with it as opposed to really being into it. I think it's just panic in case you don't like it but it does look like you will op! Best of luck!

Thanks, I worry about missing lots of this time before full time school starts so worry about losing an extra day. But I guess a less stressed mum is a benefit too.

What's your gut telling you?

summerfieldz · 02/04/2024 07:34

My gut is telling me to go for the new job. I just don't want to choose that for me if it isn't what's best for my kids. If that makes sense.

In your current job you are losing 90 mins travelling there and back each day. Over three days that is four and a half hours, more than half a day! So in fact the new job is only about two and a half/ three hours more of your time taken up. DC in school will be better off as they are already in school 5 days a week whichever job you do, and with the new job they don't have any wrap around. DC not yet in school may have one extra day in nursery, but the days will be shorter and they get more time with their older siblings. The hybrid arrangements are a huge plus which will help greatly with balancing your life. The current job is stressing you out whereas it sounds like the new job should be more enjoyable.

But most importantly, your gut is telling you to go for the new job. It is very important to listen to your gut. The worst job decisions I have made were when I ignored my gut reaction and tried to rationalise away misgivings. Your gut says take the new job. Rational analysis of the new job says it is the best option. Go for it!

You are just feeling normal nerves about the unknown. I know how you feel, similar feelings kept me in a job I hated for too long as I had lost a bit of confidence due to the awful treatment. As soon as I got away into a new, better job I couldn't believe I had put up with all that crap for so long!

Good luck to you and your family, OP. I believe this new opportunity will change all your lives for the better. Flowers

This sounds excellent advice to me.
