Hi!

Recent name change after locking myself out of my old account.

I'm currently an Operating Department Practitioner with one DD as a single parent by choice.

Over the years I've fallen out of love with my job and I want to move onto something. Now is the time for me to do that and yet I'm completely stuck as to where to go from here.

I've worked in A&E, scrub and anaesthetics and while I'd love the role of Resus Officer, it requires a teaching qualification. Something which can be done as a masters, except I'd need to top up my DipHe to a degree.

I considered a return to uni to retrain. Adult nursing doesn't appeal to me for a few reasons. Peads nursing absolutely does appeal to me, as does paramedic or midwifery. However the shift work for years to come does make things difficult.

I've managed to land on my feet in the last two years and work in a day surgery unit with no nights or weekends. While this is amazing for my family life, I feel unfulfilled and know that I'm deskilling. Going back to anaesthics doesn't appeal to me and A&E, while my favourite, isn't workable with shifts or commute.

I could top up my degree, opening doors to masters in things like surgical first assistant etc, but that'd be a year full time, or two part time, only to qualify in exactly the same position and facing further training to actually make a move.

Honestly I'm not sure if remaining in healthcare at all is best for me right now. Or whether I use this opportunity to create a different career path. I've been doing support work/healthcare since I started volunteering at 14 though, which was 16 years ago.. so it's all I've ever known!

So, people of mumsnet. Tell me of your jobs and what you love and hopefully inspire me into something!

If you like A&E it's worth asking about set hours, in our department lots of staff have set shifts to make childcare easier to plan.
