Counter offer

Anyone ever been offered a counter offer by their current company to stay after being offered a job elsewhere?

I'm down to the final stages of a job interview, but really only considering moving for the extra money. Would much rather stay where I am. No idea how likely I would be to even get a counter offer but curious if anyone has ever been in a similar situation and how I best play it.

I would not stay anywhere that can magic up money when I have a better offer, but couldn't for a loyal employee.

I have known companies to counter when someone hands their notice in, but it is not guaranteed.

If you hand your notice in and they ask if there is anything they can do to get you to stay, then you give them the number.

I have, I declined because I just didn't want to stay there.

It's not a given and I don't think it's actually that common.

If your only reason for leaving is money then that's how you play it - it's all perfect except you just need more £, can they match the salary you've been offered elsewhere?

DP told his manager he was interviewing and the ballpark salary he was chasing. Before the final stage interview at possible new company, he was offered 23k more to stay put. He did. Corporates will not just 'up' employees' salaries - it doesn't make financial sense to them.

Assuming you get offered the job, play it fairly straight. You’ve been offered a role elsewhere on X salary. You would really like to stay with current employer but the money is too good for you to pass up. Then see what they say…

Consider if you would take a compromise to stay eg a pay rise but not matching the new job. Or other perks eg compressed hours, paid training etc…

You need to be prepared to leave if they won’t budge.
