Stuck! To quit nhs or work notice

FlapjackStan · 26/03/2024 23:53

I’m nearing the end of my career break in the nhs. Prior to that I was on mat leave.
I’ve left the city that my workplace is based to be closer to relatives.

My dilemma is that I took Omp during maternity leave. I want to be able to work my notice period and then quit. However, this is not easy for me as I cannot travel back and forth for 3 month for 3 hours plus for work. Putting both kids into nursery is not an option as I don’t have the funds as I’m a lone parent. I don’t want to start a new job in the new city only for me to quit as I will be leaving the uk in the summer for the foreseeable future. But I want to be able to work enough hours to keep my pin just so I have something to fall back on just in case.

What do I do? Any advice is appreciated.

Looks like your old job isn't really an option so I'd rule that out

Pay back your OMP and leave. Pick up bank hours in your new area. Did you ever plan to return? How did you think it would work?

PermanentTemporary · 27/03/2024 08:22

Can you keep your pin if you work NHSP? I'd try and do that. There are plenty of temporary options around, though it's unfortunate timing as there will be fewer at the beginning of the financial year. But it's worth looking and hustling - call old contacts, look on linked in.

What was your plan when you moved house?

FlapjackStan · 27/03/2024 11:40

@PlipPlopChoo my partner decided to walk out on us and our young kids. So I decided to move because I had zero support in that city.

@PermanentTemporary @Auntieobem that could be an idea. Thank you.

@FlapjackStan Did you take your accrued annual leave after your SML ended. If so how many days/weeks?

You have two options, get a part time NHS job locally and work 3 months or phone your HR and ask what options you have.

Yes, I had taken all my annual leave following the end mat leave (around 6 weeks).

Would it be possible to find another nhs job without having to work notice period?

You could go off on the sick for a few months.

Edited

@FlapjackStan So you have already “worked” 6 weeks of the 3 month (13 week) period leaving 7 weeks.

I would advise you to phone HR, emails are not the way to resolve this, and ask about options.

For example could you return part time and do 2 days/shifts for 7 weeks I.e. early start, travel up, work a day/shift stay over in a Premier Inn do day 2/shift and travel home. It’s 14 days 7 weeks?

I am not NHS but I think if you got an NHS job in another part of the country it would be a transfer and they would probably wave a notice period because it’s easier than finding you a job for your notice period.

As I say talk to your HR and they will have seen this all before.
