Did you go part time for your kids?

Cutting a long story short.. I am being made redundant from my part time, decently paid, dead end job. I am trying to view this as a blessing in disguise.

When I originally went part time, I had planned to do this for a few years whilst my DC was little, but all that is up in the air now.

I’ll never be able to replicate this set up in another company so the way I see it, I have two options:

  1. Take a part time job that is loosely connected to my field, soak up all the time with DC but run the risk of having to work my way up from the bottom again in a few years.
  2. Take a full time job for the sake of my career long term, but have to sacrifice time with my DC.

WWYD?

I think you just have to do what makes you happiest. I know that kids want their mum's around more ideally but if you're really unhappy it's better you're doing something that makes you happy for not just you but your kids ( if your FT job would add to your sense of fulfillment and happiness).

If you really want more time with kids ( and don't feel bad if you don't btw, just be honest to yourself) - then I believe you could definitely work your way back to a good place career wise I'm a few years. If you can afford that. Just do what will make YOU happy. - if money allows it.

I personally would want more time with kids as that can't come back again., so part time would be good. Full time SAH I would have found difficult all the way up to school start tbh. You could try it and think no way and then you know and can opt for full time work perhaps.

I was in a similar situation and chose option B. I couldn't afford not to work and didn't particularly want to take a big pay cut and a more junior role.

I started a full-time position, and three months in I put in a flexible working request to drop down to 4 days a week. The request was accepted and now I have every Friday off with my toddler and am pretty happy with my work-life balance.
