Going for a promotion

Hi!

A promotion to deputy team manager has come up within my team. Its a very small team and I know so many people have gone for it. I've been shortlisted for an interview on Thursday afternoon and I'm so anxious about it! If I was going for this role in another company I wouldn't think twice (probably because I know I'd never have to see them again if I don't get it!)

But the worry of not getting the job is making me want to not go for it at all.

Fear of asking and being told no has always been there, in the sense I'd rather not ask and just put up with whatever!

I'm off all this week but working that day so I'll be preparing wildly over the coming three days.

Any tips for not just disintegrating when I get in there?! It's my boss and my big boss who's doing the interview.

Don't over prepare. Think of the questions they are likely to ask and prep some answers. Think about how you will make the transition from colleague to team leader (consumate professionalism) and how you might manage performance in the team. Think about the business objectives and priorities and how you will support the team to deliver them. Can you think of any improvements or efficiencies?Think about what you would say if they give you an awkward HR scenario to address, such as a poor performer. How would you manage the first 30/60/90 days in the job? Why are you applying for the role and what appeals to you about it? What will you need from your manager and for your own development? It's ok to get them to clarify if you aren't sure what they are getting at.

You have to relax and take your time in an interview. Be confident and assured, not babbling to get all your 100 ideas out in 30 seconds, so breathe and speak slowly and assuredly. Smile, lean in and look like you are enjoying the conversation. Tell them why you love your job and the organisation. Make it clear you are a safe pair of hands. Thank them for seeing you.

Don't be nervous. The worst thing that could happen is that you are no worse off than you were yesterday, but with the benefit of experience, having got through and interview. Don't make everything depend on this, and if you don't succeed absolutely do not be a dick about it. Thank them for giving you a shot, and get feedback once any emotions have passed.

I've done a lot of interviews from both sides of the table and made all the mistakes above. I'm still here and living to tell the tale, it's never the end of the world. Best of luck and fingers crossed for you.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a large buggy/pushchair superstore near/around West Sussex.

One that stocks most brands
