What do I do???!

On Monday I start a new job. Its a good job and I really like the people. However once I came out of the interview there, I saw an ad for a job that is quite literally the dream job for me, and quite hard to come by.
I applied. Then I got an offer from Job 1, which I accepted as I presumed Job 2 would be so competitive. But now Job 2 have asked me to come in for an interview on Friday.
What do I do? :-(

There's a high chance I won't get Job 2. But on the slight offchance they did offer it to me, I would feel like such a horrible person re the Job 1 team. Its really stressing me out. It feels sick to be going to an interview literally the working day before I'm meant to be starting a new job

You should at least talk to the job 2 people. Once you learn more about it, you may find it's not quite as dreamy as you'd imagined. Don't be blinded by your preconceptions.

If, once you weigh it up, you find that the salary, duties, job satisfaction, people, commute, hours, benefits, workplace, chance of progression and lunch options are mostly better at job 2, then you should set your sights on it. It's your career, so you have to be businesslike about it. No need to feel guilty.

There’s no dilemma unless you go for the interview and you’re offered job 2 🤷‍♀️

Thanks I guess what I don't like is obviously I have to start job 1 on Monday, it would be stupid not to. But at the same time I feel.so dishonest as I will be waiting to hear back from Job 2. It just feels shady

It's bad timing, yes, but you need to take the emotion out of it. This is a life admin decision.

The people at job 1 will be fine, whatever you decide.

This. It's just a job, they'll get over it. If they needed to dismiss you, they would.

It's just a job. The company wouldn't feel guilty if they decided tomorrow that they have changed their mind, neither should you. Go for the interview and see what happens. You may get there and find you don't like the people etc in which case at least you know.

I think I'm going to be in the same position, so watching with interest!

I have done this very thing. And I was offered job 2 on my 3rd day at job 1. It felt a bit of a moral dilemma but I accepted job 2. Job 1 was annoyed (think I closed the door to ever going back to them) but it was very short term pain for long term gain, and it was the right thing to think of myself in these circumstances. I still work at job 2 12 years later. Well- same employer... Over that period I have gained funded professional qualifications and tripled my salary. Job 1...had I stayed I probably would have been made redundant in a restructure 2 years later.

Go to the interview. Think of yourself and your long term. Don't feel bad.

I did this OP. Started Job A on a Monday, had interview for Job B on the Wednesday, offered Job B on the Friday and then had the weekend to make my mind up. I actually chose to stay with Job A as although Job B sounded like my dream job on paper, I didn’t get a good vibe in the interview and felt actually Job A had a better work/life balance.

lalaloopyhead · 19/03/2024 08:57

Absolutley go for the interview on Friday - just because you accepted an offer doesn't mean to have to stick with it, if you would prefer to do something else.

We have a job offer accepted and then later rejected when the person got a better offer elsewhere, it was slightly annoying to have to go back to the recruitmment process (although in this case offered it to our second choice), I would not have expected the person to come and work here if they had changed their mind for any reason.

Aquamarine1029 · 19/03/2024 08:59

There is nothing shady about it. Trust me, your new employer has zero loyalty for you, they would dismiss you in a heartbeat if it was in their best interests.

shearwater2 · 19/03/2024 10:37

Just go for it and weigh up both of your options.

TotalDramarama24 · 19/03/2024 10:45

I'd definitely go to the interview and hope to get that job but if possible I would try to delay my start date for job 1 for a few days or a week. I think I would feel less bad taking a different job if I hadn't wasted job 1's time with the inductions and introductions etc.
