New job

Got offered a new job on Friday. YAY! was caught a bit off guard as they said would call and let me know outcome on Monday (today) and was on holiday at the time so completely forgot to mention that I have a 4 week holiday booked for the summer (am moving from a term time to non term time role). Should I just drop them an email and mention it tomorrow?

You can let them know, but be prepared for the fact they might decide not to proceed with you or may advise you that they cannot approve your leave.

There’s no legal requirement for a new employer to honour this & general rule is that you must mention it at interview or at the very least before you are offered the job.

Congratulations on the job !!
Exciting.Hope you enjoy it..
In my other jobs I was asked at the interview If any holidays were booked.
They always honoured them after I got the job
Good luck.
I would drop them an email..

Clarich007 · 18/03/2024 22:03

Oh I didn't know that Mrsttc.
I have been retired for quite a while though.

SunshineaftertheRai3 · 19/03/2024 06:26

Thanks also didn't know this. Yes I've normally been asked at interview but it wasn't asked so completely forgot about it. Not sure if it will make a difference but it's with same organisation just completely different service area. Will drop an email first thing.

There are a few things to consider, including cancelling the holiday (but not without first talking to them), but also other things like unpaid leave or parental leave.

Kinsella1 · 19/03/2024 06:30

Hopefully it's not an issue for them op 🤞

If a company decided they wanted to rescind an offer to me because I'd booked a holiday I'd consider that a lucky escape from a toxic workplace.

What the hell? Like companies have so much choice of good candidates right now that they could be so picky. Most are desperate to good people.

alonglongshot · 19/03/2024 06:48

A 4 week holiday is pretty unusual though, so I'd not see them denying that a red flag, your mistake for not telling them about it. Hopefully an email will sort it.

TerfTalking · 19/03/2024 07:12

If you’re taking on a non term time job that’s likely pretty much all your year’s leave as a new starter, are you sure you want four weeks together?

Changingplace · 19/03/2024 07:15

I’ve never had an issue with a new job honouring holidays and it’s not until the summer, do you have the contract yet? I’d always wait for that before any further discussions anyway but I can’t see it being an issue.

Totally agree, it’s completely normal for new starters to have holidays already booked, never heard of a job offer being withdrawn on the basis of pre booked leave.

Arghgerroffyabastard · 19/03/2024 07:38

If they’re offering to you then they’re excited to have found you and keen for you to start… they’re not going to rescind over a holiday!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 19/03/2024 07:56

I'd be surprised if they withdrew their job offer, but I think they'd expect you to take the time from your new leave allowance, however much that is. 4 weeks is 20 working days, you'll not have much for the remainder of the year.

It’s actually very abnormal for a new starter to require 4 WEEKS of leave in one block within a few months of starting a new role. It would be unusual for an employer to withdraw an offer over a long weekend or a week long holiday, yes, but actually anything over 2 weeks it’s really common.

shearwater2 · 19/03/2024 10:45

You can only ask. It's different circumstances given that would normally be a leave period for you in your current role.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 20/03/2024 16:36

You should definitely have mentioned at the interview about the 4 week holiday and in the summer. This would ring alarm bells with me as an employer but they could work around it. I would certainly apologise to them for not mentioning it. As pps say, they'd probably take it off the rest of your leave so just be prepared that you will only have 5 days leave left (if you get 25 days).

You could, however, maybe ask about the possibility of taking unpaid leave or TOIL or buying holiday (rather than selling it), if you needed more holiday.

PotatoFan · 20/03/2024 17:31

What’s your leave allowance for the year and when does it run to? 4 weeks is a lot and depending when the annual leave period runs from and to you may not even have that many annual leave days available.

HappyHolidai · 20/03/2024 17:50

Given that you booked a non-termtime holiday when working a termtime job, it would be a nasty employer indeed that had a problem with it, given their job offer is the only reason it's any sort of an issue.

But it would probably be a good idea to talk to them early about practicalities.

DinnaeFashYersel · 20/03/2024 17:57

They will likely expect you to take this as unpaid leave. You won't have accrued enough by then and it will likely exceed your annual allowance.

SunshineaftertheRai3 · 21/03/2024 09:37

All sorted sent an email. Was absolutely fine about it. Just told me to book the holidays on the system once I start.
