I want to hand my notice in

Has anyone ever discussed handling in notice with their line manager before doing it? What was the outcome?
I’ve been wanting to leave for several months now but no job to go to yet. The role stopped being a challenge which I really enjoy. I work from home and get no support, it’s a senior role so it’s expected to a point. I’m really good at what I do and could carry on but the lack of challenge and communication from top management is becoming too much. I’ve tried to discuss it but it’s always brushed off. Would there be any point of saying that I’m thinking about leaving? I don’t want it to be a threat…

For what reason would you be saying it? If you’re going to tell them in the hopes it will prompt them to do something to keep you then you can’t claim you don’t want it to be a threat, that’s exactly what it is, you’d be saying “do this or I’m leaving” just in more words.

If you definitely want to leave the job then I suppose it doesn’t make much difference if you tell them in advance.

I just got another job and handed my notice in. In my experience saying that you're unhappy and want to leave just means managers think that you can't be relied on as you'll be leaving soon and doesn't achieve anything.

I’m friendly with my manager and I don’t want to destroy this friendship but I also no longer see my future there.

Why would you give up a secure senior job with flexibility for no obvious reasons and with no job to go to? Speak to your manager and discuss and get more responsibilities or find a hobby outside work and enjoy the quieter times at work.

Your manager is not your friend
why would you leave with no job to go to?

This. It's a no brainer!

I understand how you feel but having the flexibility works for me.
But I feel I have went backwards when a junior left I took on their work and feel I could do more and feel overpaid for what I actually do. But I need these tasks done to be able to do my own.
I am mostly left to it just converse by email

Don't hand your notice in without a new job to go to ... signed contract etc.

You don't owe your manager anything, top management aren't going to be wonderful communicators and change their style because you've say you are fed up of their top down style and lack of comms, there is no point saying anything.
