A member of the team who has been getting good results lately has been blatantly breaking lots of rules, including arriving late, not completing mandatory tasks, not following protocol etc.

In a team meeting recently, a colleague who has been deeply put out by this, asked him directly why it’s one rule for him and one rule for others. The managers response was along the lines of “When you get results like him, you won’t have to do all of those tasks either.” This has left us all stunned as a team and deeply pissed off. He is saying that the guy can break the rules because he’s doing well in his job, while others don’t have that luxury.

There’s six of us in the team, and we all feel the same, but we honestly don’t know what to do about it. This manager and colleague are very close, have their own meetings, go for drives at lunchtime, and consistently arrive late. Additionally, the manager seems to do anything or go along with anything that gives him the least amount of work to do and right now that guy is making him look good so he’s willing to go along with that even if it’s not fair on the rest of his team.

Any advice would be appreciated.

We need more context. Is he in sales? Or bringing in income through deals?

It’s education actually.

I would just focus on my own career unless he was putting anyone at risk.

I'd be tempted to follow up in writing...

Further to team meeting want to know what level of results/targets is the threshold beyond which x mandatory process doesn't need to be complete or punctuality is no longer required and flexible hours begin etc.
