offer today of a job - comparisons below, one is the current role - the other is the offer.

Job 1.
35 hours for 30.5k
4 mile commute.
managing team of 3 in a now self sufficient department within a firm, have spent 8 years using specialist knowledge building the team and training them, widening their abilities.
small company, total 26 staff - been around 20 years.
No additional workplace benefits

Job 2.
32 hours for 30k
4 mile commute
no people management currently - potential to build a team as workload increases, they want me to do here what I've spent years doing at above firm but may also not happen so potential to be stuck at offered salary.
bigger, well known firm with 75 people in the local office and a client base 4 times the one at current role.
private healthcare, death in service benefits, fruit, on site gym, lots of 'wellbeing' promoted.

I'd move but can't they offer a bit more to makr you move? Or offer a bit more holiday or bonus or something?

It does sound like there's more potential at the second one. And a 4 mile commute sounds like a dream to me, so both great in that respect.

You need to negotiate a pay rise for the new position and look at pension payments and other extras.

Get an extra 3/4K so it’s worth moving.

Job 1) 30500 /52 /35 is 16.75

Job 2) 30,000 / 52 / 30 19.23 - so you are getting a pay rise due to less hours unless the ÂŁ30K is pro rata.

no your calcs are correct @Scarletttulips the hourly rate is an increase, as I'd already specified that would be what I'd be looking for even with reduced hours,

I'm just feeling very 'better the devil you know' kind of concerned.

I'd be wanting more money to move to job to to compensate for losing the 'better the devil you know' and also losing length of service which is important in certain situations eg redundancy, employment rights and right to claim unfair dismissal etc.

I wouldn’t move in those circumstances, I would want an overall pay increase or more significant hours reduction to make the risk of a new role worthwhile.

Actually that's a valid point. I'm changing my answer to job 1!

Why is your pay so low? I wouldn't be moving jobs for that salary and I'd be asking your current employer for a raise.

@Aquamarine1029 market rates here sadly, We're in a small town in the North and office management positions all over indeed all seem to top out at around 30k.

but, only paid 170k for our 3 bed detached in a nice area, so swings and roundabouts.

That's really patronising and quite rude.

@QforCucumber I'm up North too and agree. My sons living down in London and already on more than me and I've been a manager for years now. I've got a lovely 5 bed home though and a cheap commute. Whilst he's in a shared flat with an expensive season ticket. Housing, transport and childcare are most people's biggest outgoings and all 3 are so much cheaper up here.

@Fallenangelofthenorth yup, I could double my salary by moving to London, but my house price would more than quadruple so would absolutely not be even remotely worth it. The fact that I commute 4 miles, can drop the kids at school and we're both home by 5:30 every day is is worth so much more!

Totally agree. I'm in "God's own county" so have the best of everything - beaches, rivers, beautiful scenery, great shopping and nightlife. Worth the trade off to get less pay, but still be able to afford a much nicer home and have more free time and money.

As someone else said I wouldn't move for that difference. you have 20 years at your place and better the devil you know as you say....you need more of a increase to move...

QforCucumber · 15/03/2024 15:46

@ilovebrie8 I have 8 years at current place, business has been around 20.

thanks all for the insights, going to leave it the weekend and think of maybe a counter request.

As you sound happy in your present job l wouldn't move. I presume you haven't to think about it much after hours and have a nice team all working together. There are too many unknowns in the new position. Awkward people to manage? Awkward boss for yourself? Bad atmosphere? No l wouldn't be bothered taking it on . If you were on a long commute it might make sense but barely anything to be gained and the possibility of losing loads.

so, I negotiated somewhat - Job 2 have come back with 30 hours and 35k.

I think it may be time to make the jump. Thank you for the advice though, I wouldn't have pushed back without it.
