Tell my Manager enough is enough!

I work in a regulated, audited job, colleague that helps out isn’t regulated, he caused a massive breach to a client to their detriment. Client has complained. My Manager is trying to sweep it under the carpet and have me fix this asap. It’s stressing me out and taking me away from a huge workload already.

I don’t want to be involved as im not even sure what I am doing is correct, im not sure how to approach this, it’s causing me sleepless nights, my colleague isn’t even concerned.

Can I tell my Manager to get X to sort out their own mess? It’s getting impossible to keep working there, it’s a horrible environment with very poor management but financially I need a job.

If manager is also colleague’s line manager, then the manager should be sorting it out. It’s the reason why managers are paid at a higher grade.

It’s one thing to ask for your help on the fringes, but not to put you at the centre of the disaster that is not of your making. It sounds really rough, you definitely need some wine in the bath.

I would initiate a conversation with the manager and just say that given the situation you are not confident in your approach and don’t want to make it worse, so are escalating it to management level to deal with. I don’t know if it will work given that it sounds like manager could be a bit ineffective, but please do make your feelings known.

I’m a manager and regularly deal with all manner of stuff that makes me grind my teeth and situations which I didn’t create, but at the end of the day I get a bit more wedge on payday, so it’s my responsibility.

Thank you for your response. I’m constantly assisting, helping and fixing things this person has created. Our Manager doesn’t want to deal with anything but the level of stress has ramped up and is effecting my health and how I am at home. It’s all I’ve been thinking about for weeks and Manager seems happy to let me sink.

I will try to arrange a meeting though. Thank you again.

I know it’s not easy, but a meeting is the first step to really starting to hammer home how much this is affecting you. It’s not ok that it’s impacting on your life outside of work or that your health is suffering.

One meeting might not fix it all, but it does at least get your point of view out in the open (and hopefully on the record?)

Manager really needs to step up in terms of colleague - either they need alternative duties or regulatory training. But none of that should be something that you worry about or be on your plate.

If you have the possibility of taking just one day of leave to give yourself a nice long weekend I would also recommend that. Just to give yourself some physical and mental space away from the situation. Take lots of care.

It is unacceptable that an employee who has not gone through the requisite regulatory process is allowed to do work that is subject to regulations.

Is the company not subject to a code of practice that makes such a contravention by the manager subject to a disciplinary process?

If they are covering up a breach can you use your whistleblowing line. You can refuse to cover things up, quote your industry body if you have to.

If your colleague caused a regulatory breach has it been reported? If not I would be calling the whistleblower line.

My Manager is very weak, doesn’t want to rock anyone’s boat. There is a few in the office who have approached that we are completely stressed and nothing is ever done to change things.

My colleague who made the mistake is just very lazy and always rushing, that’s how the mistake happened.

Ive been pushing for over 4weeks to have this escalated. Time to job hunt, just so disappointed as if managed correctly it could be a great job.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, I feel my Manager isn’t handling the situation the way it should be and I am being placed at the frontline to sort out.

Im worried if the situation isn’t being correctly dealt with that I may be also doing things wrong.

What is the code of practice relating to the regulatory process in your industry? Have you checked your company handbook?
