Overlooked for a promotion

I've been at the company 3 years, my colleague just 1. A higher role with a pay rise became available which we both applied for. I didn't even get an interview as they need the person to work Tuesdays as this is the day we are short staffed. which I already do work Tuesdays. my colleague works part time and can take the extra day on Tuesdays so they are going to give them the job. All week I've had to listen to my manager tell me how great it will be when they give them the job and they can work the extra day because we are short staffed. I'm upset. I very much wanted the position, I've been studying professional qualifications for the past 2 years for this role. My colleague hasn't, they say they can just learn as they go. I'm thinking of leaving. I'm being held back from career progression. My partner is telling me I'm over reacting. It all just feels unfair and I feel sick listening to management saying how she can learn as she goes when I've spent 2 years and my own money studying for the qualifications. They said I'm good at what I do and there's no one to do my job if they where to give me the promotion as I train all the new starters, but I'm only on minimum wage!

Sounds like the most important thing to the company was having an extra staff member on Tuesdays, and they were willing to promote someone over you to get it. If I were you I would tell them I'm no longer available to work Tuesdays and start applying elsewhere. Sounds like you've been getting qualifications that should make you attractive to a rival company and since you're on minimum wage you aren't going to get paid any less.

That's a really short sighted and dysfunctional decision on their part. All they're doing is ensuring that they lose you from the organisation entirely.

Once you're feeling calmer, start looking for roles elsewhere. Somewhere else will value you and the effort you've expended to improve your skills.

Agree with this. And I wouldn't be happy with the partner saying you're overreacting either. I don't think you are.

Don't be indispensable - that means you can never be promoted. Sad, but true. Take your skills and excellent attitude elsewhere.

Itslegitimatesalvage · 11/03/2024 21:35

They’ve pretty much told you that you won’t progress there, and will remain on minimum wage whilst training new starters and watching them get promoted and pay increases. Start applying for other jobs.

You are being overlooked as easier to keep you where you are, and you DESERVE and clearly WANT to progress. They don't DESERVE you.

Follow your dreams, and go after a new opportunity.

TheSandgroper · 12/03/2024 05:30

Reddit is quite clear that for progression and better wages, a new job is essential. Staying where you are is telling them that you are happy there, for whatever your reason is.

Oblomov24 · 12/03/2024 06:25

So unprofessional and shortsighted of them. Unfortunately this happens a lot, you make yourself indispensable, so they want to keep you there because it's too costly to replace you. I'm afraid you will have to move. Start looking for a new job.

WhereAreWeNow · 12/03/2024 06:34

You have been overlooked. You're not overreacting. The need to cover a particular day should have been separated from the need to create/fill a more senior post. Why couldn't you have done the more senior post on your current work pattern and a new person been hired to do your current job on whatever days they need covering?
I would be looking for a new job.

Garlicking · 12/03/2024 06:44

I'm really sorry your bosses are short-sighted fuckwits. You're right to be upset. Your partner's also being a dickhead. Start looking for a job where they'll appreciate a motivated, ambitious all-rounder like you. Good luck!

Thank you for all your replies, it makes me realise that I'm not overreacting and that I should value my worth and look for career progression elsewhere x

Yes!!!!! Get everything you can from the company - for example if there are any courses you could go on and get them to pay for etc to stop you "moaning" for a little while? Do these while looking for a new job, and get any further experience that you need for your confidence and CV. Attend webinars/seminars/conferences etc...... get what you can. Then run on the pay you deserve. Be selfish. Focus on yourself.
Also this person who takes in to do the job- dont help them too much.

labamba007 · 12/03/2024 20:04

Can you talk to them about promoting you both to the role. They're going to be in the exact same position when they lose you by being short-staffed on Tuesdays!

Whattodowithit88 · 12/03/2024 21:49

It’s definitely time to move. Go for jobs that are high paid too, starting anew job is the best time to get a pay rise.
