Telling colleagues that you've given notice

I work in a potentially high stress field, with vulnerable clients, which requires good teamwork and team spirit to work well. I love my work. I started a new job, and that teamwork and team spirit is severely lacking, which is why I am leaving after only six months.

I have told my senior manager (he is supportive) but not my line manager (he is part of the problem). I dread the potential atmosphere during my notice period.

I'm on one month's notice and have accrued two week's leave. WIBU to give my notice in writing one month before my new job starting date and take my two weeks off as the last two weeks of my notice period?

Can I ask for my resignation to be kept confidential, to prevent the atmosphere from worsening? My line manager would have no responsibility for hiring my replacement.

No, your line manager needs to know if one of his staff are leaving. It’s just two weeks then you’re gone, hold tight.

You can only take your remaining annual leave if they agree to it. Otherwise they can pay you in lieu instead. Depends if they value two weeks of you working over you not being there.

I’m surprised your senior manager hasn’t already told your line manager, of course they need to know- what did your manager say were the next steps after you told them?

The two weeks leave has already been approved. I booked it as soon as I had my new starting date. I know that they can cancel my leave, but senior manager knows my plan and does not object. If it sounds like he's glad to get rid of me, I don't think that is the case. He recognises the problems in the department, but it is clear that certain members are favoured by his manager, so he is not being given the freedom to manage us properly.

He did not say anything about next steps, just congratulated me warmly, thanked me for the verbal advance notice, and accepted that I would be handing in my written notice nearer my notice period.
