…..what would you be expect to be earning now on the basis that you were in the same job. I cant believe that I’m being paid the same as all my predecessors, with the exception of the one who stayed the longest and after 3 years got a 50p pay rise. To be honest I think the job holder was overpaid in 2014 but I still feel that something is not quite right with the rate not changing in a decade!

Have you asked for a rise and they've said no? What was the reason?

DarkForces · 09/03/2024 14:39

It's pretty irrelevant what they paid in 2014. If you think you're worth more ask for a rise and if they say no then get job hunting.

But it's not that you've been working there for a decade and earning the same?

But that the pay is the same for people doing the same job as it was in 2014?

But you think they were overpaid in 2014?

There are so many factors depending on the job etc. On face value you could assume there would have been increases but it really depends on the job and the employer.

About £23ph (45k/yr based on 37.5hrs/wk which is what I do) based on inflation would mean your pay is worth the same now as it was then. But that would mean you haven't had a pay rise (exceeding inflation) at all, which I certainly wouldn't have put up with.

The BoE inflation calculator suggests the equivalent wage today would be £18.80.
