I think the correct term is cabin crew. Maybe if you search for that on job sites you might find your answer?

Baileyscream · 01/03/2024 07:02

Depends on the airline. I used to fly but too long ago for my average wage then to be of real use to you now. Wage was made up of basic salary, flight allowance (tax free) for every hour from check in at home base to half an hour after landing back at home base (so if on a trip it was paid for the entire trip) and commission on bar sales (duty/ tax free, drinks, snacks etc). For long haul I used to clear about £2200 in 2006.

Picklestop · 01/03/2024 07:03

Or flight attendant.

“Air hostess” is about forty years out of date and definitely not the language you should be using should you get to interview.

BlueBirdSingsAgain · 01/03/2024 07:06

Hi,
Flight attendants or cabin crew as they are known these days earn around £23k to £27k though you get allowances for each flight depending on how long you're away and obviously free accommodation and sometimes a free breakfast at hotels.
You'll need to consider fuel/travel to whichever airport you'll be flying from. Were you considering long haul or European?
It's also extremely competitive to be successfully recruited - they often receive thousands of applications. British Airways and Virgin Atlantic have just had a recruitment drive - VA had over 8000 applications for @ 100 positions so they can really cherry pick the best people.

JustWhatWeDontNeed · 01/03/2024 07:08

Pick an airline and Google your question. The answer will be found... 🔮

Cabin crew though, please.

dottiedodah · 01/03/2024 08:46

Cabin crew now I think! As others have said very competitive, popular job .Best of luck .travel is obv a big part of the job and wages may be second to that of course

You forgot ‘ladies’ as well.

Dontcallmescarface · 01/03/2024 08:58

It depends on the airline. Also they tend to recruit cabin crew who have a sense of maturity about them and the tone of your post suggests you don't have this ("air hostess", "girlies"), It's hard work and needs a lot of self discipline.

notimagain · 01/03/2024 09:03

This^^

Like other flying jobs the what you get and how it all works on the operator and FWIW the salary comparison sites often don’t include allowances which may (or may not) add a significant amount to base income.

Indeed. Friend of mine thought it was going to be a more exciting version of working on the perfume counter at John Lewis.

Then she went for the assessment day and they started talking about emergency evacuations, restraining drunk passengers and giving first aid to ill passengers to try and keep them alive until the plane can make an emergency landing. Plus there's all the unsocial hours. I think she had decided by lunchtime that it wasn't the career for her.

TakeOnFlea · 01/03/2024 09:39

Fucking hell

Girlies?

Newgirls · 01/03/2024 09:41

I’m always so impressed by cabin crew. So hard working and positive dealing with irritating passengers. I can see why the recruitment process has to be thorough!

InflagranteDelicto · 01/03/2024 09:55

My ds is cabin crew- over winter he's spent a fair bit of time on standby which is boring. Equally it's hard work once in the air, especially on the shorter trips when there's so much to get through. Passengers can be an absolute treat too.
That said, it's perfect for him because no 2 minutes are the same.

Training was 6 weeks, and very full on. There's several exams and each required not far from full marks to pass plus the practicals. Pay- basic for him isn't great, but I guess part of that is because he's under 21. Flight allowance and commission is a good top up but not a set amount each month.

You need to think about where you're based, he has to live within 1h travel of the airport so ds pays a healthy sum for a small room in a HMO because he doesn't drive. The hours are not regular either which can make childcare/regular commitments difficult.

It's not a job I could do- I don't have the desire to deal with the Great British Holidaymaker, nor do I want to find myself trying to control a scene like the one in Japan when the crew had to evacuate their plane.

bluesclues9 · 01/03/2024 09:58

So much wrong with this post😂

Hibye23289 · 01/03/2024 10:01

Oh for gods sake, I used to be an air hostess and I love being called it. Stop taking offence to everything! Can't help now but 15 years ago I was on around 1400per month which isn't good now but I was living at home so it suited me fine

Should read £1200 in 2006 not £2200 (although that would have been really nice).

Air hostess,girlies WTAF !!

SomethingUniqueThisTime · 01/03/2024 11:26

‘Air hostess’, ‘ladies’, ‘girlies’. Seriously!!!?

MissusKay · 01/03/2024 11:30

Check out you tube for flight attendants that work for companies you're interested. A lot of them do Q&As about the job which will give you a better idea.

It's not an easy or glamorous job and there a ton of competition for jobs. Good luck!

Thank you so so much to everyone who was helpful!! I've always thought this app was for women and always had women respond? It's literally called 'mums' net lol. If you don't like what you read scroll on and get a life. Doesn't always have to be negative in life.

Good Luck! There's always so much negativity on the internet, I've even found googling about exercising "ooh well that won't work unless youre diet is 80 percent good" which is true but doesn't always need a negative spin. Smile, be passionate, be able to swim, seem dedicated and excited and how you value the company, don't have any tattoos on show, I had 5 weeks on training and exams and I was 18 when I passed. Go for it you really only live once and yes it is tiring haha

I think people were just pointing out that "air hostess" is an outdated term.

I found it worrying that upthread someone mentioned cabin crew have to pay for their own accommodation if they don't stay close to the airport.
