SAHM's - how do you earn extra cash?

My maternity money (£100 per week) is about to stop and I am not able or ready to go back to work yet. I am looking for ways I can earn a wee bit of money from home. I don't need a fortune but a little extra would be helpful. Just looking for suggestions

Solo- I started off on Ebay to see if there was a market then I did my own website (very very hard work especially with my mushy babybrain) with 1&1 which is fairly easy.

When it came to a point I needed a much better website with more bells and jingles I had one designed.

It is worth speaking to Businesslink as I got a grant of £500 towards the site, they give free advice (without them I wouldnt be where I am today)plus courses and have other grants as well

O and before I forget they have a department that will review your website for FREE. Was great getting feedback on the site from somebody who wasnt trying to make money out off it IYSWIM

Thank you pickie, I'll certainly take a look at that soon...

Sorry to gatecrash this thread but I am thinking of doing something similar to you Pickie but selling lingerie. I know it's a different market but how does this work for you now. I mean in terms of how many hours a day you work on your site and whether you have childcare.

Depending on where you live and if you can sing a bit, have you thought about running either music sessions for children or antenatal music sessions. Both of these are run as franchises, low start up cost and it's great fun too. I do it and I love my job!

I started doing Truly Madly Baby parties, have now gone back to work part time so I have less time but still pick up the odd things here and there - good way to get out of the house as well. To make any decent money at these things is always harder than it looks though.

If anyone in the SE London / Kent area fancies having a party though let me know!

Stefka · 29/03/2008 11:34

I can sing a bit - where would I find out about the franchise for music sessions?

micegg - the good thing from having a website is that you decide when you work. I normally work evenings and when DC are at preschool (7.5 hours a week). hard work and can be lonely (miss the watercooler gossip breaks ect)
I dont spent much time ondeveloping my site at the moment (very very easy to use - X-cart shopping basket)as done all the hard work last year but assume you will get new lines all the time which will take time uploading ect.. #

When Dc were smaller they used to go to a childminder for 2 half days so I could get on with it and DH (when he was still able to) looked after them on Saturday so few more hours.

Thanks Pickie. Thats very helpful.

solo - I'm also a Body Shopper. We're all self-employed so you sort your tax situation out according to your own circumstances. I've been doing it for nearly 2 years now and it has fitted in brilliantly with being a SAHM. Happy for you to e-mail me if you want info on joining.

solo · 01/04/2008 12:00

Thanks Smalldog, I'll keep that in mind.
