Hi I'm just wondering if anyone works for a uni? Particularly student support roles but generally like to hear from anyone working in this field. I work in a secondary school as support staff but looking to make a move to higher education in student support if possible. Pay and conditions (pay scale and room for promotion plus hybrid working) are attractive but quite concerned i might have a "grass is always greener" mentality ! No room for promotion or wfh in my current role and I'm stuck on a poor salary.
If you work for a uni do you like it? What challenges are there in higher education? Have you been able to develop and be promoted? Any other advice or information helpful!
Thanks xx

I did it for 16 years (still feels weird saying that), I really enjoyed it but over the years they did lots of restructuring in student support, took the admin staff out of the departments and much less student contact. My old UG administrator role ended up being more data entry than anything else. I missed the student contact so I moved areas. For me the students made those roles, the moment they took that away it was just another admin role.

I did get promoted, ended up being a PA for the deputy Dean of the faculty but found the chance of progression really minimal, people tend to stay in the more senior roles. I could have stayed there until I retired but I wanted more.

ETA I left almost 2 years ago and saw so many changes in my 16 years there.
