Remote Internships for Software Engineering graduate

Hello! I'm looking for advice about remote internship opportunities and where to find them! It's not for me but for a friend, who is a graduate with around two years of work experience. For visa reasons (living abroad), they cannot complete internships in person so need to find online opportunities in the field. If anyone knows of any good websites to try or companies who offer this then please let me know! Would be greatly appreciated!

Sorry! What an idiot I am! I forgot to mention that they are a Software Engineering graduate and are looking for jobs in this field, particularly Front end development or similar.

I think it's vanishingly unlikely that any company will offer a wholly remote internship. Interns are being trialled mostly for nontechnical skills - their work ethic, their self-directedness, their ability to get along with others, their longer-term potential - and they're expected to need a lot of "soft" support and tutoring in basic office etiquette. Supporting the training of entry level staff is one of the big reasons many companies are mandating more in-office time. In any case, they would still need a legal corporate presence in the country the intern is located in, and they are categorically not going to go to the trouble of establishing one if there isn't one already.

The graduate would be better off looking for internships where they live.

A few things come to mind. I work for a large multinational technology company with HQ in the USA but employees people globally, including remote positions:

  • he might struggle to get an "internship" if he has already graduated. Do you mean an entry-level position? My company only offers internships to active students enrolled on a course (undergraduate or postgrad)
  • we also offer fully remote work, and internships, however my company still needs to be hiring in the country the candidate is living in. For example, we have remote roles in the UK, USA, specific European countries etc. However, the candidate (for tax reasons) needs to be situated in the relevant country and have the right to work there. For example, I couldn't be hired for a remote US-based role while I'm living in France.
  • the company can extend the hiring region. For example, i could live in France, apply for the remote US-based role, really impress and be offered the job, and say "I can't move to the US anymore". The company are within their right to either tell me to move on, sponsor my visa to relocate, or say "it's fine, we can employ you in France"
  • the choice to extend the hiring region often depends on the hiring manager and whether they're willing to manage someone in a different time zone. Hence really needing to impress. I'm not sure whether this would happen for an intern.

As for the jobs themselves look on LinkedIn, in addition to the job listings individual people on LinkedIn typically share jobs. The graduate needs to build their LinkedIn profile and start following software engineers and recruiters who will post relevant jobs. There's also lots of discussion on LinkedIn about remote work, which can give much more context about the different kinds of remote work: There aren't many companies doing "work from anywhere" anymore (I feel like this is what you're describing). Most are "remote" within a specific geographical (I.e. country) region.
