What else can I do?

I have backed myself into a niche position at work. I am paid well. But after years of being treated horribly, I think it might be time for me to look for something else elsewhere.

My current thinking is that I could perhaps look at becoming a union rep and get my feet under the table at a trade union if I do that for a while. Does anyone do that? Any advice

I suppose I have transferrable skills but I might also be awkward in saying that I don’t want to work nights or weekends but I still like the money.
I think I’m just smacking my gums a bit, trying to think out loud in a safe anonymous space.

What do you do now?

Hipnotised · 21/02/2024 22:35

If you're not a rep now (which is unpaid), what makes you think you could get a paid role in a union?

Jabberwonky · 21/02/2024 22:37

Agree.
I've never worked anywhere where a union rep gets paid. It's a voluntary role.

I know being a rep is a voluntary role. But if I wanted to solely work for a trade union I would need rep experience. I was meaning work as a rep to give me a bit more experience in other matters and widen my span away from the niche-ness of what I currently do.

Ive done a little bit more research, and the job I was eyeing up (solely as a regional officer at trade union requiring rep experience) isn’t even a full time post so it doesn’t pay as much i would maybe hope for anyway.

i work in healthcare but not a doctor or a nurse. But specialised.

I’m just feeling a bit dissatisfied at work and I’m looking to either go do something else or add more strings to my bow.
I am not old but I also don’t want to go back to uni/study

You want good money for office hours. You’ve backed yourself into a niche healthcare role (want to give us a clue?!). You don’t want to do any training.

It’s not gonna happen.

Is this niche healthcare role something you could do from hired rooms and become self employed, setting your own hours? OT, physio, osteopath etc? Any there any modules of your current role you could do, to expand job opportunities?

No. Unfortunately not.

I think I’m just going to need to be happy with where I’m at or go and study or make other compromises. I do appreciate that.
