Urgent: job application deadline tonight and totally stuck on supporting statement.!

A job ad caught my eye whilst I was away last week and only just got around to reading the full description & package - all sounds amazing but the deadline is 10pm tonight!
I tick all the essential and most of the desirable boxes time management clearly needing work and just finished updating my CV to ensure it reflects all these, but really struggling with the supporting statement and not sure where or even how to start. Lost confidence (thanks peri menopause!) and this would be my first full time role in a while but think a fresh new challenge is just what I need and am definitely qualified for the job.

I'm obviously not asking anyone to write it but any tips on structure, where to start, rounding off, what exactly is expected from a "detailed supporting statement clearly demonstrating how you meet all the essential criteria of the role as outlined in the JD " Should I be writing a narrative about my work experience ensuring I cover all the attributes in there somewhere or should I go through each of the criteria and specify how I meet these with specific examples.

Any tips to get me started much appreciated as I'm panicking / procrastinating right now!

Given your shortage of time - why not use chat GPT ? Plug in the job description and give it your cv and it’ll generate something that you can tweak.

i usually try write mine first and then get chat GPT to improve it so I decide on the overall structure but given that you are short on time , probably best to just use it to generate it and then tweak what it gives you. Good luck,

Please don't actually write on there that your time management needs work!

ChatGPT is your friend here.

Won't this just repeat what you've said on the CV? Sorry not an expert on ChatGPT.

OP - if someone asked you why you'd be a good fit for the role what would you say? Write this with examples of what you've done which make you a good fit.

Capmagturk · 19/02/2024 18:33

What's the role?

I had the same last week with a school application for a part time role. They wanted 2000 words 😩 I did use chatgpt and it said everything I am capable of doing, just in a very clear way ❤️

Oh my god, 2000 words - that's an essay. How ridiculous! I always thought a supporting statement was just a paragraph or so.

MuchasSmoochas · 19/02/2024 18:44

Is it civil service? If so use I all the time, one para for each essential criterion. STAR with mostly A for action.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 19/02/2024 18:45

It sounds like they want you to make it clear how you fit the person spec.
I would open with why im suited for the role, then go through the person spec in order.
I would use STAR to give examples of how I fit the role.

RoadToPlants · 19/02/2024 18:46

Another vote for ChatGPT here. I would open an account if you don’t already have one, type out the bullet points of the headings in the JD and then write under each how you meet them. Ask it to re-write the text so it sounds like a professional supporting statement. Then review it, and sometimes it can be useful to ask it to do it again but “tone it down a bit” .

Then copy and paste it into word, make sure you check for errors and tweak as required.

Will save you hours

PiggieWig · 19/02/2024 18:47

I’d use a STAR formula too. I’d be wary of ChatGPT. Some employers filter out anything that looks like it’s been written by AI (although my field involves writing, others may not be as stringent).

you tell it what you want it to write so it’ll write out the paragraph addressing how you meet the criteria using text from your cv. The more information you give it, the better it can write the supporting criteria.

make sure you check for American spellings etc and I always tone it down/rewrite stuff that does n’t feel authentic.

I know. That was just a personal statement after filling in my employment history!

boyohboys · 19/02/2024 23:18

Thank you all deadline made with your suggestion of getting started with chatGPT and then rewriting in my own way and incorporating STAR to the criteria.
Phew. I'll let you know if I get an interview!
