Change of rota

70 replies

workcrapp · 18/02/2024 22:50

My new manager has tried to change my work pattern.
For example I am contracted 40 hours a week. Over a 3 week rota this will total 120 hours.
I have 2 colleagues on the same contract as myself. I am doing more hours than they are. I am doing 130 and another person 110.
I have refused to change hours.
My manager doesn't seem to understand what is wrong with this and I feel I'm going a bit mad.

You really need to explain a bit more. Why are you doing 130 not 120 over three weeks? I'm guessing you're paid for 130 which is why you're refusing the change? If not what's the issue?

workcrapp · 18/02/2024 23:01

@Lochroy
No we all get paid the same. We are salaried.
Manager says if you work it out over a month it's ok.
It's a weekly rolling rota. Early mids lates.
We all did exactly the same and followed the same pattern.
As we are so short staffed the new manager thought she'd change it to plug the gaps.

So you often work 10 hours for no pay?

Is it the pattern of hours you object to?

workcrapp · 18/02/2024 23:08

@Pegasusforme
No. This is recent.
3 of us on the same contract same pay. We are all contracted 40 hours.
We all worked the same shift patten on a 3 week rolling rota. All worked a total of 120 hours over 3 weeks.
The new rota has us all doing different hours over the 3 weeks and we will get paid the same.
This is why I'm refusing. I am not working 10 hours more for no extra pay whilst a colleague does 10 hours less for the same pay.

So have you worked it out over a month? Is she right or are you still working more?

workcrapp · 18/02/2024 23:12

@FacingTheWall
It can not be worked out over the month. Every month is different with a different amount of days.
Contract states 40 hours per week on a rolling weekly rota.
This has been like this for the 10 years that I have worked there.
And it doesn't work out over a month anyway.

workcrapp · 18/02/2024 23:18

0ur salary is worked out on 52 weeks, not monthly.
Hourly rate X40 X52 /12

Stick to your guns. Are you in a union?

Overthebow · 18/02/2024 23:21

Can you work to out over the year? Are you all doing the same amount of hours a year or are you doing more?

workcrapp · 18/02/2024 23:22

@Pegasusforme
Yes I am. They have been harassing me to change. I've kept all communication to email and they don't reply. The new manager is insisting on having a chat over the phone.
I'm just confused as to why she is doing this whether deliberate or she is not understanding what she's doing wrong.

OP posts:
workcrapp · 18/02/2024 23:28

@Overthebow
If the rota rolls as it's supposed to I will work 130 hours every 3 weeks and my colleague only 110 every 3 weeks so it won't work out.
I think the other colleague is 118 hours every 3 weeks.

OP posts:
Station11 · 18/02/2024 23:53

Well just explain it to them over the phone

Well just explain it to them over the phone

Far better to have anything said in writing.

OdinsHorse · 19/02/2024 00:15

If its a rolling rota, then don't you all do the same?

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 19/02/2024 00:21

So the next 3 weeks do you get a different rota where you do 110 or 118 then switch again? Everyone switches to another one after 3 weeks? Surely that’s the plan?

workcrapp · 19/02/2024 10:32

@Dontfuckingsaycheese
No we shouldn't get new hours.
The rota rolls so repeats the previous 3 weeks.

Spirallingdownwards · 19/02/2024 10:42

Set it down in writing for all 3 of you.

Say my rota hours are (x). Over 3 weeks this = 130 hours. If you multiply this by 17.333 this means I work x(17.333) hours a year.

B's rota hours are (y). Over 3 weeks this equals 110 hours. or y(17.333) hours a year

C's rota hours are (z). Over 3 weeks this = 118 hours. or z(17.333) hours per year.

We are all paid £same on a salaried basis.

So over a 3 week basis I would work 20 hours more than B and 12 hours more than C And over a year I would work 346.6 hours more than B and 208 hours more than C FOR THE SAME MONEY. Under the current rota we work the same hours for the same money.

Any new rota should be changed so that we all work the same number of hours.

workcrapp · 19/02/2024 10:56

@Spirallingdownwards

I did exactly that.

New manager doesn't understand.
She won't reply to the email.
She was calling my personal phone to discuss it.
How do I deal with a manager with this mentality?
I don't have the time or energy to make sure the manager is doing her job properly.

Get your union involved.

I really feel for you. Sounds enraging.

Lochroy · 19/02/2024 11:08

I'll admit to not being the brightest spark but I'm also not completely stupid, but have to confess I am struggling to follow.

Can you get to the crux of the issue in one sentence? Leave everyone else out of it, rolling three weeks and so on. Just crystallise the problem e.g. the plan you are proposing makes me work over my hours for which I would not be paid.

In an email, put that as the top sentence.

Then below you can list the maths.

Then state that you previously put this in writing or spoke on the phone on xx date, and are keen for it to be resolved because it needs to be sorted before zz when the rota is due to start.

Then say it is not appropriate for her to call you on your personal phone, she should call your work phone during work hours to discuss.

Send it to her and cc HR.

workcrapp · 19/02/2024 11:22

I'm actually thinking of putting a grievance in.
I can't believe she is this stupid, I feel it's deliberate and favours my colleague.

8 people have resigned in 3 months due to similar issues.

OP posts:
FoxtrotOscarFoxtrotOscar · 19/02/2024 11:28

If you do discuss by phone, take notes, then put your understanding of the discussion in an email afterwards to your manager. Continue the paper trail.
Sounds infuriating.

workcrapp · 19/02/2024 11:29

@Lochroy

The reason I'm down for working more is because either
A) she cannot count
B) she doesn't understand how contracts work
C) she is favouring a colleague and was hoping no one would notice
D) she is thick

None of these give me much faith in her as a manager.

I have asked for an explanation in writing by email. She will not reply. She wants me to phone to discuss on my personal phone.
I refuse to talk to her told her to give her reasons by responding to my email.

I think my problem is this gives me an insight into how working under her will be going forward.

OP posts:
TraitorsGate · 19/02/2024 11:36

I would get your union to take this on, if there was no prior discussion and hr were not involved then changes cannot just be made. I would ask for a staff meeting with the matron, union reps and hr .

PutMyFootIn · 19/02/2024 11:37

YANB|U - I wouldn't work more hours for less money than my colleagues and I don't know anybody who would to be honest.
