Career Progression and Promotion

I'm hoping for some pearls of wisdom here. I have the opportunity to interview for a promotion into a more senior role, but I am torn about whether to continue with the application process or to withdraw.

Pros

  • This is the natural next step in my career, and will give me line management experience.
  • Allows me to have more input in the direction of the business.
  • Shorter working day.
  • I'm already doing a fair amount of the requirements, the additional element would be the line management.

Cons

  • I currently work full time hours over 4 days, but the new role would require me to revert back to a 5 day week.
  • The increase in salary would be spent on an additional day in childcare for my DD, who is almost 2.
  • It means I'd lose the day I spend at home with her.
  • More responsibility/potential pressure.

What would you do?

Take it in a heart beat, OP.

But when you say you've been invited to interview for it, does this mean its yours to lose? Or are you up against other people for it? If you're offered it, how much space is there for negotiation (like doing five days in four)?

If you're up against others, you might not get it (sorry!). Even if its yours to lose, wait until you're offered and the prospect is more 'real' and then make your decision.

I didnt want full time childcare when my child was that small as I loved the time with them and it doesn't last long.

However is this something that you ca. Try again? Or is it a take it while the chance is there type of thing?

Thanks both, @NellysCheekPlaster this is all hypothetical, there are 2 other people who will be interviewed so I may not get the job, but I was hoping to make a decision before accepting the interview about whether it's right for me. I have asked the question about flexible working, and due to the responsibilities it is a 5 day per week role.

@GettingBetter2024 this is my dilemma, I really love my day at home with DD. I'm not sure how frequently this type of opportunity comes up at my employer as I haven't been here a huge length of time. There may be something in the future but we are quite a small team within the business.
