Ok I have only been in new job just over a month with new employer. I moved location and my new job is same level and I have been working at that level for 6 yrs.
I just finished a masters degree in management/leadership preparing me to take a step up.
when I left my previous role there was a restructure and 2 new promotion opportunities presented but I had already made decision to leave.
In new organisation I accepted my new job and 2 promotional opportunities arose that would have suited my experience But I had already accepted my role. So I feel I kind of missed out.
a new opportunity has been advertised. I am thinking of applying.
I am apprehensive as it’s not an area I have directly worked in. But I do have lots of relevant experience.
but I am torn as I really like my new team and my boss is great. My DCs are 9 and 7 and so taking a step up means more stress. So I want that?
but then I think I studied 2 years part time to get the masters degree preparing to move into senior leadership.
the new job would mean a £20,000 in salary and at this point in my life (45) it would be great to boost my pension.
what do I do - go for it or not?
I know there are no guarantee I would get it and I would have to do a lot of preparation in 2 weeks.

How often do these positions come up? If not that often then yes, I would - what do you have to lose.

On the other hand, a non stress nice team atmosphere is worth its weight in gold, especially with young children.

I don’t think these roles come up that often in a stable organisation as there tends to be only 3 at the top and then up to director.

The best advice I was given for these situations is:

Just apply!

You're putting a lot of ifs and buts and obstacles in the way, it's amazing how easily these clarify themselves if you're offered the job. I remember once swearing blind I'd never commute past a certain distance for instance. Right job came up and that rule melted away because I wanted the opportunity.

On another note, as someone in senior leadership I appreciate the idea that doing a qualification in leadership will prepare you for leadership, but it's one of those things you learn by doing and most of the theory goes out the window as you feel your way through it and learn "on the job" (and realise none of your peers did the course and everyone is just winging it!!)

@youveturnedupwelldone are people really winging it? My internal voice worries that I am not exoericed enough, or if I just do this course or that course I will be more prepared. But when I have observed senior leaders in their roles they do not know anymore than me. I hope I can fake it until I make it!

Just apply. Let other people tell you no if they think you're not a good fit - no need to tell yourself no instead. What's the worst that can happen, that you get the job?
