Was I wrong to enquire about an internal job that hasn’t been advertised?

Hi everyone,

I’m facing a bit of a dilemma at work and could really use some insight. A few months ago, there was an opportunity to apply for some permanent contracts, but due to misguided advice from my previous manager (with whom I had a strained relationship), I ended up withdrawing my application based on misinformation.

Unfortunately, the promised alternative position never materialized, and I missed out on the opportunity. However, since then, my previous manager has been moved to a different department, and I’ve been much happier at work under the guidance of a supportive new manager.

Now, someone in the team leaving, so a new contract will be available internally. My new manager has been great so far and has shown confidence in my abilities. Today, I reached out to express my interest in the upcoming role and inquire about its expected advertisement date, even though nothing formal about the job has been advertised yet.

However, now I’m second-guessing whether I acted too hastily or if it was premature to express my interest and cringing at myself! I haven’t heard back from manager and I’ll next see her on Monday.

I would really appreciate any insights or advice from those who have been in similar situations. Should I have waited longer before expressing interest, or was it the right move to show proactive enthusiasm?

Thank you for any help you can offer!

I'm not sure what the issue is here? Are you just overthinking maybe because you want it a lot and you're worried about being turned down?

JellyMouldJnr · 08/02/2024 17:52

I think you did the right thing, absolutely! Don’t worry!

I don't think it's a problem to ask but are they going to recruit to replace? A lot of companies I work with have hiring freezes at the moment and are not really replacing people who leave.

I don't see any problem with mentioning your interest. What is it that you're worried about?

iklboo · 08/02/2024 17:58

You did nothing wrong, try not to worry.

You did the right thing. Best of luck!

As someone who used to line manage I think it shows enthusiasm and initiative.

I'd have waited. They might not even be replacing the person.

Absolutely can't hurt to have expressed an interest. They may or may not be able to recruit right now but it doesn't hurt to have asked

It’s fine to let your manager know you are interested.
