hi all,

I'm looking for some advice , I currently work as a GP receptionist but want to start something else. I get excellent feedback from patients and my managers but I feel really feel like I'm at a dead end for some odd reason and I'm not sure what to do now - I'm in my early 20's and never went to uni. My current workplace is nice but its not somewhere that will support with career or financial growth!

I enjoy working in admin - and have background of working in early years as well. I'm wondering what courses may be available to help me up the ladder as well. All help is appreciated, thanks in advance!😀

Have you thought about applying for any other NHS admin roles. Are you near any hospitals or NHS clinics. They usually pay better salaries/ pension benefits than GP practices and have more scope for progression.

If you like admin then look for an admin role in a large organisation where there is a hierarchical structure in place and room to progress.

Make sure when you get the job you make it clear to your manager that you are looking for progression and development, ask for opportunities to expand your role and take on extra responsibilities, ask if they have any development programmes that will give you a structured approach to learning management skills and taking on a leadership role. Look into more specialised administrative functions, GRC analyst, facilities management etc where you can develop additional skills and find an industry you enjoy working in.

You may never want to be a line manager but developing leadership skills helps with lots of other roles too like project coordination, it's about being able to identify the strengths and weaknesses in the people you are working with, building relationships across different teams and levels of employee, getting buy in and being able to move forward change in a positive and collaborative way.
