Paying your employer “return to work bonus back” after maternity leave

Hi, I have received just over 6k for returning back to work after having 9months on maternity leave.

However, if I leave my job within 12months of receiving my “return to work bonus” I’ll have to pay it back. Obviously I was taxed on that 6k, if I do have to pay it back am I able to claim the tax back on the originally payment on receiving my bonus?

I assume payroll would calculate the amount of the bonus you would owe, taking account of your tax paid at that point

Im going through this with a welcome bonus at the moment that was 2500. Ive been told this will be taken out of my final salary. When I queried if I will only pay back what I received as I had paid tax on this, I was told the company would claim back the full 2500 and my tax code would reflect that I am owed money back to offset the money I originally didnt receive due to paying tax on the bonus . Doesnt make a lot of sense to me! But they assure me I wont be out of pocket.
