Hi guys,

Just wondering for the larger companies who do long haul eg BA … Virgin … is it possible once training is completed to work part time as opposed to full?

Trying to work this out before I know whether to apply as will be quite the juggling act. I have heard they are a lot more flexible than they used to be and it really is something I would love to do but full time and being away from home so much unfortunately wouldn’t be an option. However 2/3 days a week would be perfect.

Thanks so much in advance!

How far do you live from an airport OP. You need to factor in travel time. Driving home exhausted after a long flight isn’t fun.

Standby is still very much a thing, both at home and at the airport.

@JollyHostess101 my daughter is currently at an airport college biding her time till she is old enough to apply for cabin crew - what jobs on the ground would you recommend if she decides that flying isn’t for her?

@Honeypot14 apologies for the slight hijack there!! A friend of mine has just started as cabin crew with easyJet - she’s in her forties so never too late!!

Customer Service jobs on the ground- I’ve been there 18 years and have never seen so much progression than I have done since Covid there’s been a lot of opportunities especially for the “youngsters” who started just before the pandemic!

I can only speak for BA but they have a fantastic apprenticeship scheme in all areas of the business (Including one that was half and half crew and ground but not sure if that’s still ongoing as I’m on mat leave) which she might want to have a look at!

I’m at BA - since Covid we are now one fleet - so do both short and longhaul. We have a bidding system where each month we bid for the flights/days off we would like - not guaranteed but at least you have a choice. You will get standby at the airport - 12 days over 3 months - I detest standby!
I have flown while bringing up my son ( now 20) it can be done but the tiredness is incredibly hard and people ALWAYS think you have been on holiday! Your life will become a military operation.
I am currently studying for 3 days of SEP exams - I have flown for a long time and it is still so daunting especially now at BA we fly on so many different aircraft. Anyway back to my books!!

@Honeypot14 ..Yes ....you do need to update us on what you decide on 😅!

bizzey · 06/02/2024 22:38

We are all very invested in your cabin crew career ..!

I had it on my radar (ha ha !)...but alas ...my height hampered my application 🤣!

massive short arse !!

Bluesclues1 · 06/02/2024 22:54

Just apply when your kids are older - I used to fly for easyJet and BA and flew with so many women who decided to join once their kids were old enough to leave. I trained with a few with no previous experience who were in their 50s.

Ex cabin crew here, used to fly for virgin’s short lived short haul arm. I also did their recruitment, we had 1000 applicants for every vacancy. We used to get bin bags full every day. If you do decide to do it, read the instructions on the application. It’s a really simple way for them to filter. I’m assuming it’s all electronic now but we used to ask for applications in black ink - if blue, went in the bin. In an a4 envelope - if any other size, went in the bin. Unfolded - if folded, went in the bin. So really really really read the instructions!
