Trying not to take this personally

Today while I was out of office I received a resignation with immediate effect from a member of my team who's been with us a few weeks.

Cited not feeling suited to the role or work environment but didn't expand. Not a word in person that he wasn't happy, no outward sign day to day (we're office based so see each other in person all day). Seemed to get on ok with everyone.

I had a couple of suspicions that his understanding of the wider role might not be quite what he'd sold at interview but was giving the benefit of the doubt and planning further support and training. Plenty of acknowledgment and praise for the parts of the role he had picked up quickly and was producing great work on.

I'm fairly new to people managing (this was only my 3rd recruitment, and one of the other 2 was a return to the company so both sides were happy and confident ahead of start). Feeling a bit taken aback by the walk-out and wondering if I've failed as a manager and if there are things I could have done differently Sad

It sounds like he had a better offer.

You can't take it personally, it might be because of a billion different reasons, a better offer, something personal he doesn't want to share, or truly that it's not clicking for him.

I say good for him . So many people stick a job they hate and aren't particularly good at . It's no reflection on you OP he has just decided to move on .

It sounds like he had a better offer.

I'd rather he just say that, then I wouldn't be wondering if it's my fault!
