To think this wage is too low?

A teacher on UP to £120 a day.

As the ad says, not only will you have to be a teacher and all the areas that goes along with that (marking, planning etc), but you’ll also have to deal with spitting, hitting and biting.

I actually trained to be a teacher for the purpose of becoming a SEND teacher.

I would come home bloody and bruised every single day and I’d still be expected to do everything a regular teacher did, including working evenings and sometimes weekends.
I was only getting £90 a day too!

I have obviously left now and haven’t gone back to teaching because I’m completely put off but these job ads really frustrate me.

Most of the staff lasted less than 1 academic year, which was very stressful for the students and the reason why is because it’s mentally and physically draining and then the wage is absolutely rubbish.

I only realised how bad the wage was when I came on to MN and seen that posters were getting paid £30k+ and not coming home bloody and bruised and spending their evenings and weekends lesson planning, doing reports, having parents evenings etc.

Should we not be paying these staff more because of the crap that they have to deal with every day?

That's supply wages not permanently employed...

But yes supply is shocking these days!

EveryoneEnviesMeEverywhere · 28/01/2024 18:09

OP, should we not be paying our doctors/GP's/consultants, nurses, cares more along with our pensioners, police, armed personnel, etc etc

I just jacked in jobs when younger where I felt they were taking the p and not paying me what I was worth - moved to better places, more money then more money, less hours, closer to home and enjoyed doing

So, if I was you, I'd move or look for a different line of work

£43,800 per annum gross. (120 x 365).

Sounds good for a teacher if that's right. Don't you get like 3 months off across they year?

Lovethatforyouhun · 28/01/2024 18:10

Temps get paid per day they
work. Not over the summer holidays not 365 days work fgs! Pay is bloody shocking!

Except schools aren't open 365 days a year and supply teachers only get paid for the days they work. Which is a maximum of 190 days if they manage to get work for every school day, which is £22,800.

But you don't work 365 days so it's only about 27k
5 days a week for 45 weeks

No workplace is open 365 days a year.

Actually some are. But that's beside the point.

Doctors/GPS/consultants are on a lot more than £120 a day but I definitely think carers etc should be paid a lot more.

I think any job that involves working with societies most vulnerable and results in being physically attacked regularly, should definitely be well paid.

Having staff only stay for a short amount of time is not good for the students and you’d think they’d want to try and retain them.

1 person doesn’t work in 1 job 365 days a year though.

Obviously hospitals and police stations are but you wouldn’t get paid for the full 365 days if you’re not working that amount.

Obviously. Just a light hearted joke at your wording.

You work 365 days a year???

If you really wanted to do a like for like comparison it would be 120x5 = 600 then 600 x 52 = £31,200

So just over £30k for an experienced professional at the top of their payscale.

Or average teacher working day ~ 10 hours. So £12 p/h. Maybe only 8-4 for day supply as opposed to long term supply, so £15p/h if being generous.

But you knew that, and are just being a goady arse.

5thCommandment · 28/01/2024 18:38

@fuckityfuckityfuckfuck no I don't work 365, I'm paid monthly based on an annual salary that breaks back to £240/day. So I multiplied up the rate in this thread assuming the same. What a lovely person you are. Reported.

This is up to £120 a day, per days worked, not 365 days.

Reported because you don't like a post? OK....

I do not for 1 second believe you earn £240 × 365, so nearly 90k, and don't understand how wages are calculated.

itsmyp4rty · 28/01/2024 19:51

Over 25 years ago I was earning £100 a day supply. That was in London, but £120 is ridiculous.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 14/11/2024 10:36

Teachers are paid 195th of the annual salary per day so I estimate you should be paid £223.62 gross per day (as qualified and max experience)
