2 part-time jobs, do you still get taxed heavily on the 2nd job?

Or do you pay the same tax if both jobs are less than full-time hours, iykwim?

I know usual full-time hours are 36.5hrs a week. I work 16.75hrs a week and wondered if I could get another part-time job doing something in Photography, but don't think it would be worthwhile if I get taxed heavily on the 2nd job!

Am I making sense?

You will be taxed at a flat rate on the second job; if this means you overpay tax then you can claim some back.

But if the first job pays more than the threshold (ie about £5K pa) then you would need to pay that amount of tax on any extra hours anyway.

Kewcumber · 20/03/2008 12:55

doesn;t matter whether you work in one job or 20 the tax you pay is based on the total invcome you have. tax deducted on a second job seems like a lot because you have already used your tax free allowances on the first job.

You will be taxed on your overall earnings, overall. You can't have a personal tax allowance for both jobs.

What would generally happen is that, assuming you are paying tax on the first job (ie over the personal tax threshold) then you will pay at the basic rate on the second job.

You may end up overpaying tax to start with, but will be able to claim back tax if that is the case.

Kewcumber put it a bit more succinctly

dilbertina · 20/03/2008 12:57

You get one "tax free amount". You should get this on the job you earn most money on via your tax code. For your second job your Tax code will be BR and you will be charged at Basic Rate.

So yes, you will be taxed more at 2nd job, but only because you are already having your tax free allowance taken into account at first job. If you did more hours at first job rather than getting a second one the final tax paid would be the same.

The only problem really comes if you don't earn more than your Tax free allowance at first job (ie less than £5220 ish) in which case you may end up paying too much tax. If this is the case you should discuss situation with Tax office to make sure you don't lose out.

Hope that makes sense!

hmmm must practise typing more quickly!

Thanks. I was just under the impression if your first job was full-time you got taxed heavily on any other jobs, so thought that 2 part-time jobs would be different for some reason!

I do get taxed on my current job. Probably would be best to ask for more hours then, but wanted to do something different for sanitys sake, lol.

nooo BexieID it makes NO difference whether you do more hours where you are or do something different as a second job - you will pay same tax either way - honest!
