Job dilemma!

Hope you can help me make a decision about two jobs! I have been in my current role for two years and, while it’s frustrating at times and some days I don’t feel particularly valued by management, I love it.
I was not looking to move but have been approached by a previous employer who has asked me to come back. The two roles are in completely different industries. I wouldn’t be tempted for reasons below but the money is significantly more and would make a big difference to us now and over the next few years. There is also an outside chance my husband could be made redundant in the medium term which is a factor. I’ve listed some pros and cons below.

JOB A
Current job
Salary approx 70k with nil chance of meaningful increase
Amazing colleagues- large team
Love the role- varied and interesting work.
I manage a team which I enjoy
10 min commute
No chance of career progression without moving location

JOB B
Previous role I’ve been offered again
Was in the role for 15 years and was increasingly unhappy over the last few years
Much higher salary - potentially double or more.
30 min commute
Might get the chance to manage a team - not guaranteed
Due to various reasons I think I could mitigate the things I didn’t enjoy about the role last time and think I would enjoy it again.
Same colleagues are still there and I get on with them well. Small team.
Work not varied and desk bound.

My heart says stay but my head says go. I’m completely torn and am totally incapable of deciding! Hope someone can give me some words of advice - my decision deadline is fast approaching and I am swinging completely one way then the other then back again! The opportunity is now or never- it won’t come around again.

YABU - stay in current role- you love it, moneys not everything
YANBU - go to new role - the pay difference is too big to pass up

Double the salary would have me on my bike !!! How much difference to your day-to-day life would it make ?

I made a similar decision calculating how many years I earlier could retire on the money difference ... but I'm old so you may have other concerns :D

FinchFrench · 27/01/2024 20:39

Thank you for your reply. Not so much difference day to day but certainly in the long run it would make a huge difference. We could save more, have nice holidays and as you pointed out - retire earlier! I think I’m going to have to get on that bike. I’m sure I’ll be ok and enjoy it once I’m there but it will be a wrench to leave.

You say you love your current role and £70k is a very decent salary - I'd stay. But I am not a risk taker!

myphoneisbroken · 27/01/2024 20:51

I'd stay - how many people can truly say they love their job and their colleagues.

Daniki · 27/01/2024 23:00

Could you use the job offer as leverage in your current role to get an increase? Even if it doesn't match double an increase at all would keep me there if I loved it! There's a lot to be said about enjoying your work, money isn't everything(but it helps 😂)

NewName24 · 28/01/2024 00:14

I mean, £70K is a very good salary, and loving your job is great.

But double ??
I mean, come on.
Considering the fact it is still a reasonable commute, you like the people, you've swerved the things you didn't like last time, and your dh may be redundant soon - it is a no brainer.
I'm a 'money isn't everything' person, but the job you've been offered sounds fine, and double the salary really is key here.
You'd be very selfish (to your family) if you didn't take it, IMO.

Job B. It’s a huge difference.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 28/01/2024 07:19

I’d stay where I was happy, but I left a high salaried stressful job for a stress free minimum wage job and have absolutely no regrets.

fluffi · 28/01/2024 07:29

What is the difference in your actual take home pay between the 2 roles because You’ll start to lose your personal allowance after £100k and £100-£125k is effectively like 60% tax unless you are put a lot into a pension to keep you below £100k. Lots of free take pay calculators online.

Then what is your take home per hour when you factor in the commute? Job B is 40 min more per day, 3+Hrs a week of time lost to commuting.

Job B may still make sense but I’d do some sums first!

Loopytiles · 28/01/2024 07:35

On the basis of what you’ve listed job B seems best - double the salary! Unless something like its in a declining industry, while job A is in a growing or thriving one.

outside the immediate employers, what are the situations and your prospects in the two v different industries? Eg job opportunities commutable from where you want to live, salaries, potential outlook for the industry.

FinchFrench · 28/01/2024 08:36

Thank you everybody. You’ve all made really good points and it’s been really helpful for me. The potential for my DH to be made redundant I think is the clincher. We would be stuffed if I stayed in job A and he lost his job.
