Does anyone work in a fully matrixed environment?

Until recently I worked in a multiskilled team of ~15 people. We worked in a one-team environment, with a portfolio of ~5 projects at a time. I really enjoyed it.

We've just been restructured - the team has been split up into the three different skill sets we cover and incorporated into relevant departments within the wider organisation. My new department is much bigger (~50 people) and works in a completely matrixed way. The new team that I line manage is for line management purposes only - there is no team identity or common goals and everyone works on different projects with people from other departments.

It's all very new to me but I can't get my head around it. I don't feel any connection within the team or the wider department. I'm wondering if this is a common way to work or actually a bit weird.

I have worked before in a matrixed environment in a different company, but in that case the team I was in (~10 people) had an identity and were using the same product/skills/techniques which we then applied to different projects with people from other departments. That worked very well and I was happy in that environment.

What you need to do is make sure the managers managing the work provide you regular and detailed feedback. Do not leave it until mid or end of year instead get it each month and feed into 1:2:1s.

Ask them simple questions:

  • what has x done well
  • what training/development does x need
  • where can x improve/what do they need to do less of.
