NHS jobs, need GCSE certs even if taken 30 yrs ago?!

So went for an interview within the NHS, not worked for them before so only a band 2 position and they said I'd definitely need Maths and English GCSE certificates.
It was 30 years ago! GCSE's honestly must mean bugger all after all this time.
I did look at requesting a search through one of the exam boards but the search alone cost £43 and I'm pretty sure there was more than one board.
It's quite possible they got left behind when I left a relationship quite quickly but really can't remember.
Apart from spending a fortune is there any other way to get the job without certificates?
(Didn't get the first one but have applied for another and suspect they may also ask for them)

I am from a country where GCSEs are not done. My employer was happy with my degree.

Good luck OP! Hope they turn up!

When I needed my O level certificates many years after leaving school, I phoned the school to ask how to go about getting duplicates. I was surprised to find that they still had copies at the school and sent them out to me (I can’t even remember having to pay for them)

My last job change (5 years ago ) I needed all my certs from o levels in the 70s onwards. Private sector finance

HidingFromDD · 23/01/2024 23:22

And yes, have significant further education and masses of professional qualifications

I retrained as a teacher in my 40s and had to produce certificates for GCSE (ahem! O level!) maths and English as well as my degree certificate, as these are requirements for the training.

I have them so it wasn't an issue. We have kept the DCs' certs safe as well. Similarly for an NHS job - and when we interviewed candidates there for a role I had to photocopy loads of people's exam and degree certs for our records. I think it's pretty usual.

Agree I've never been asked for a private sector role.

In a Teaching interview once they not only wanted degree certificates which is expected and as mine were in my maiden name a marriage certificate to show the link, but I had to go into my loft to get A level Certificates because they wanted those too.

@swapcicles Hey I'm in the exact same position as you right now. Offered a band 3 admin role.. wanted the actual certificates & not statement of results. So £80 later & I have received my NVQ level 3 cert but still awaiting English cert from AQA.. this is my only hold up!! AQA don't even tell you if they have it or not due to GDPR🙄 it's just a game of checking the post every day for 20 working days.. if you don't receive it then they don't have it. What a bloody waste of time.. I'm so frustrated checking the post & my '20 working days' doesn't finish until 5th Feb... So just beware its a looong waiting fckd up process😫

I'm just hoping they won't need it or by some miracle they are in my mum's loft 😂, she doesn't think so though.
I'm going to ring my old school and see if they know which board it was but it's been renamed a couple of times so when I search on the AQA website it just shows the current name and I don't know if this will hinder things, Wonder what happens if your school is no longer there?
Really can't afford the fees to just search for a certificate, I wouldn't have thrown them out but also can't think of any reason I would have needed them since the last century 😂
Btw I completely understand anything after GCSE'S/O levels as more specialised but before that's just standard really.

I never picked up my certificates in first place which was silly of me. Luckily never been asked for them. Only about my degree!

I gave you a link where you can see which current exam board has certs for old exam boards....

But where do people keep them? Ours are currently in a locked filing cabinet ... but what if there's a house fire. Do employers insist on hard copies these days or will a scanned or photographed copy do?

Its not just health care, most jobs I have had over the last 50 years have wanted to see my qualifications, including O level certificates.

What sort of jobs are they? I’m in an extremely senior role and have never once been asked to prove school, college or university qualifications. I could literally have made them up and nobody would be any the wiser.

I’ve had 4 main jobs since leaving university and even the first one didn’t ask for proof. All the subsequent ones wanted to know about was previous work experience.

MirrorBack · 24/01/2024 09:13

I left a job offer because of this. My GCSE certificates were stolen in a break in, I’d had a job offer and they were still separate in a bag that was taken.
I offered instead as proof I had a grade C English gcse my qts certificate (grade c English/ science/ maths is a requirement for this), my transcript of grades issued by the school on results day listing my GCSEs, my A-level grade A English, my law degree and masters degree in education.
They wouldn’t budge, so I withdrew and went elsewhere where they had common sense
