Using first name in school

I've recently started in the kitchen at a primary school. In my old school I was called Mrs "Surname" I am separated and hate my surname. I wish to be called by my first name in this job, so when kids have asked my name I've been telling them it's Sarah, so Miss Sarah. Is there any law that says I have to be Mrs Surname? I don't want to go through the rigmarole of having to change it.

There's no law, no. I would check in with whoever hired you and see what they say. They may not want to set a precedent, but I don't see what's wrong with Miss Sarah. If someone had a first name sounding surname (Thomas, Dean, etc) it would have a similar sound anyway. We have a member of staff at the school I work at known as Miss [Firstname] because otherwise she'd be the third Miss [Surname] and it's confusing enough having two of them (in the same year group, no less!)

If they say no, do you have another surname you could use? I can't see that you'd have to change it legally to use it with the children. Could be your maiden name or something, or even just any surname sounding name you like?
