On level 3, sickness and diarrhoea again. What are my rights?

I was ill a lot last year with s&d, my ibs seems to be really susceptible to a whiff of it anywhere. Our policy is the 48 hour rule as I work with vulnerable people.

They’ve said one more day and I’ll be hauled in, but I need to phone and tell them this morning. I’m in the union, what can I expect please?

I think you need to perhaps have a think whether this job is appropriate for you given this ongoing issue

regenerate · 19/01/2024 08:39

your employer sounds desperate tbh

RowanMayfair · 19/01/2024 08:41

Are you actually vomiting? As diarrhoea is a very common symptom of IBS and doesn't mean you have a virus. If my DH with IBS had to take time off every time he had diarrhoea he would never be at work.

Shiningout · 19/01/2024 08:43

How many times have you been off with this? Vomiting regularly is not normal even with IBS so if this is happening have you actually had investigations medically?

Errolwasahero · 19/01/2024 08:44

I don’t usually get d, my ibs is more pain and constipation. I’m not vomiting just now but I do feel sick.

I have tried to find other work but haven’t been successful.

Agree with this. If you're not vomitting then how can you be sure it's d&v and not your IBS?

Errolwasahero · 19/01/2024 08:46

@Shiningout it was about once every two months last year, the last one was about August though. I had a massive illness in jan 2022 and they did lots of investigations, and tested me last year for sibo etc but didn’t find anything.

My ibs is well controlled, it was the gp who said it seemed that I was more susceptible to these bugs and maybe it is due to that.

Errolwasahero · 19/01/2024 08:52

No. Does that mean I should just go in though? Out policy states either.

I will call them and let them decide

and they will say come in
and rightfully so

shower, dress and get out the door OP!

Yes.
You can't stay off just because you feel nauseous 🤣, that is ridiculous.

I could say I'm not coming in because I feel I may have a migraine coming on. What I do do, is go in, say I feel like I'm ailing and may need to leave and then carry on until either the end of the day, or until I need to leave 🤷🏻‍♀️

If you've not actually been sick and just feel nauseous then I would definitely still go into work. Feeling nauseous isn't necessarily a sign you've got D&V.

MoroccoMole · 19/01/2024 08:58

You're on stage 3. You should be dragging yourself in dead at this point if you want to keep your job.

KateyCuckoo · 19/01/2024 09:02

For God's sake get to work! Why are some people such skivers!

hellojelly · 19/01/2024 09:03

Unfortunately I agree with others, you're looking at losing your job. I'd be almost sure of it.

If you're not actually vomiting then it's not a sickness bug?

Errolwasahero · 19/01/2024 09:05

I have literally shat everything in my gut since yesterday, toast this morning went through in 20 minutes. I wasn’t asking for a diagnosis but hey ho. Thanks everyone.

NahHumBrag · 19/01/2024 09:06

Sounds like IBS as others have suggested. Go in and if it gets worse, come home. Show willing at least.

SunshineYay · 19/01/2024 09:07

You're not vomiting so you need to go to work. Take some immodium. You might be intolerant to something and that's why you have diarrhea. You might feel nauseous because of the diarrhea.

Octavia64 · 19/01/2024 09:12

I have ibs.

I have diarrhoea on a regular basis sometimes lasting days. I don't take time off for it as I know it's not a bug.

I do have meds that help me cope though.

Do you have meds?

I would abide by the spirit of the rule rather than the letter. So if you know it is your ibs go in.

RowanMayfair · 19/01/2024 09:14

Go to work!
you don't have D&V sickness you have IBS. Take medication and go to work or you'll get the sack.

maudelovesharold · 19/01/2024 09:14

it was the gp who said it seemed that I was more susceptible to these bugs and maybe it is due to that.

This isn’t a diagnosis, though, this is just a suggestion by the gp as to why you appear to get so many ‘bugs’. He can only go by what you’re telling him.

Is this about d&v, op, or about being so unhappy at work that you are looking for a reason not to go in? If the latter, then I would go in today and try and have a chat with your boss/supervisor to discuss your worries/a way forward. The current situation sounds unsustainable. Your work can’t rely on you and you just sound like you don’t really want to be there.

KateyCuckoo · 19/01/2024 09:02

You so very obviously have zero idea the hell which is IBS.

Overthebow · 19/01/2024 09:18

Do you don’t have s and d because you’re not having s? What about the other times, did you actually have s and d then or was it just d? Sounds like it could be your ibs rather than a big, you probably need to go in.

MyheartgoingBoomBoomBoom · 19/01/2024 09:19

I feel for you OP. I’ve had IBS for 25+ years, if I pick up a stomach bug (which others seem to recover from within days), my guts will be off for weeks. People seriously have no idea how shit (literally) this condition is. It is so unpredictable, can be fine one day then completely off the next.

Sorry, I can’t offer any advise work wise as I now work self employed as I had to completely rethink my whole career which was destroyed by this condition.
