Do people actually check Glassdoor reviews?

How much weight do you give to reviews on Glassdoor when job hunting? If there were a lot of bad reviews saying the same kind of things would it put you off?

Also if you’re an employer, do you ever check your firms reviews on there?

I don't because I think it kept prompting me to write a review or disclose salary or something. I expect it was pilot error on my part, but I found it very annoying.

I think I did once write a review so I could check reviews on a place I was already working, because I was hating it! It wasn't that useful though as not very many reviews on there

I have a look every now and then, (usually as my company witter on about how wonderful they are) and I go down a rabbit hole of looking about.

Like most reviews there are good and bad, it's where they're consistent is where the truth lies.

I’m the same, never really looked before but I had a look at my current (toxic) employers reviews recently and they are all so bad! I will add my own anyway but not sure if it will actually help at all 😬

I think having to write a review to see a review is the problem. Applying for jobs, you might want to look at several potential employers, but most people cannot supply several reviews or salaries every time they are jobhunting. It's quite a crap system (unless I'm doing it wrong which is very possible)

DH did when he was last interviewing for a job. One of the companies he had an offer from had some terrible reviews that went right to the culture of the company - he actually raised it with them and did receive assurances that the department he was joining was fine and most of the negative reviews came from a different area.

But, when it came down to picking between that company and another one the negative reviews made him think twice and he took the other job - it wasn't the only factor but certainly went towards tipping the balance.

Yes it would put me off. But I'm aware that what is written depends on many many factors and people may not be who they claim to be. There's a company in my sector (childcare) that have many many negative review talking about bad and uncaring managers. I've done supply work for them and I believe it all.
I also reported the company to Glassdoor for fake positive reviews. They had a glowing review every Friday from a variety of senior staff for several months. Quite obviously they had a rota going on.
And they did very much check their reviews and respond to them all. They were very busy bees.

I'm a senior manager in a company and I keep a close eye on the glassdoor reviews,
Our HR team are all over them anyway and respond to negative reviews and ask for More detail or insight to try and resolve any issues

It wouldn't necessarily put me off an organisation if there was a few bad reviews if I could see there was replies and contact it would tell me they are actively trying to help resolve any conflict and that's positive.

I also take reviews with a pinch of salt if you have a great experience somewhere you take that as the standard so don't wrote about it. I think glassdoor are good in mitigating the fact people don't often leave good reviews by mandating you need to write reviews to see them etc

I have made a decision about whether to apply or not based on what GD said. Was an awful set of reviews about unrealistic poor communicator bosses. Gave the place a big swerve.

equinoxprocess · 14/01/2024 12:21

People usually leave reviews because they're leaving or looking to leave, so your sample base is skewed.

I don't completely disregard them.

I kind of benchmarked the prospective employer by looking up reviews for my previous long term employer. I knew a lot about issues at PLTE (since year dot).

the % of negative comments about prospective one was very high, and the specifics were dire, compared to what past employees said about PLTE.

I admit to looking at reviews on glass door and elsewhere. What really makes me take notice is when companies respond asking for more information. Those I don’t apply too.
