Jobs like a postperson?

I currently work in marketing and my biggest client is ending their contract (it’s just what happens, nothing we’ve done wrong). I’m fed up of working behind a computer, having deadlines, working at home and just thinking so hard all the time tbh.

I felt like being a postperson would be an ideal career change (lots of walking, being outside, seeing the same faces but working mainly on my own). But it seems like Royal Mail is in disarray and the job is actually quite high pressure.

What could I do that’s kind of similar where I’m outside and moving a lot? I have a driving test soon so hopefully will pass (although I know most people don’t pass first time) but I won’t have much experience/confidence so don’t want a job that’s mainly driving. I want employment security and to get out away from the computer but I don’t really have experience in anything other than marketing. Feeling a bit stuck ☹️

Does salary matter?

Things like garden maintenance - perhaps for the national trust or similar? Or any sort of warden etc for an outdoors attraction.
If you like animals, working at a zoo or a farm (there are farms near us that are visitor attractions, always advertising jobs)
Supermarket delivery driver? Less on the walking front but mostly on your own/meeting people on your rounds.

(sorry, didn't clock the bit about driving, so maybe not supermarket delivery driver!)

I did read a post where someone’s DH said being a supermarket driver was way easier than working for RM! Farms and zoos is a really good idea, there are a few round here. The only issue is transport so I think I should really focus on passing my test. And no, salary doesn’t matter too much as I’m not massively well paid anyway and would accept less money for a job I enjoyed more

Dog walking is very popular round here. Would that be feasible where you are ?

I did three years at Ocado doing home delivery and also spent some time with Sainsburys

I enjoyed both immensely. Just you and the open road, management only get in touch if there's a problem which is very rare

I had to move due to a relocation. I got to see some lovely houses and villages and even delivered to a castle and a few stately homes

Traffic warden ? Outdoors for sure.

fatandhappy47 · 11/01/2024 12:59

RM won't take you without a driving license now anyhow

You could deliver leaflets. Not great pay but you are on your feet in the open air.

But I agree with others that dog walking can be more lucrative. There's a woman near us who just walks pugs. She walks all through the woods with seven pugs on leads and two elderlies struggling along behind. They always seem very happy, including the woman!

That sounds really nice and my delivery drivers always seem pretty unstressed so it’s definitely an option for when I have a bit more driving experience!

Train dispatcher on the platforms. Can walk a lot if you have to cover various platforms and then walk up and down doing checks etc.

I would love to be a dog walker but unfortunately there are loads round here. I can ask if any need any help but I’d be surprised if they’re run off their feet

I want a job like this.
I want a job with lots amd lots of walking. I'm very lazy, not getting any younger and really need to be forced to exercise. Don't want to carry heavy things though so I think postman is out.

Cotswoldbee · 11/01/2024 16:08

A lot of driving jobs won't be open to you if you have had a full licence for under 12-months.
Driving is not always the pleasant job some people think. You have deadlines to meet, have to contend with other drivers (some of which can be horrible), holdups (roadworks etc) and when you get to your destination you have to park up and get your delivery to the door (fine in a leafy area with uncluttered roads but a bit more difficult on a red-route, narrow street with no available parking and only a single lane down the middle, blocks of flats etc).
